Description
IATENTED JULY 30, 1907.
W. A. MITCHELL. DRUM AND SUCH LIKE VESSEL.
APPLIOATION FILED MAY 5, 1906.
1% 7/672 for,
WALTER ASHBY MITCHELL, OF DUNDEE, SCOTLAND.
DRUM AND SUCH LIKE VESSEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application-filed May 5,1905. Serial No. 259,073.
To all 'uhom 1! may concm'n:
5e it known that I, \VAL'IER AsunY MITCHELL, a subjet'l of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident. of Dundee, in the county of Forfar, Scotland, (whose pnst-ollice address is Kings Cross, Dundee,) have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drums and Such Like Vessels. (for which I have aplied for a patent in Great Britain, No. 5,522, bearing date 16th March, 1905,) of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invent ion relates to drums and such like. vessels, the object being to improve the aperture and the mode of sealing same. And in order that my said invention and the manner of performing or carrying the same into effect or practice may be properly understood, I have hereunto appended an explanatory sheet of drawings in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate corresponding parts in all the figures where shown; that is to say:-
Figure l. is a section through the head of an ordinary drum showing the cover in position. Fig. 2. is a similar view showing the cover ready to be placed in position.
In (.'&ll'l' 'lll; out my invention, l form in the head A. of the drum. or such like vessel, a circular aperture of any desired size. the center of such aperture being either concentric or eccentric to the axis of the drum, or other vessel. This aperture is formed to have a rais d mal lip or head B. of any suitable depth. The cover t. is stamped with a female bead I). which fits on to the male bead. that. is to say the cover when placed in position [its on to the female bead. At-
tached to the head are two or more sheet metal fingers or tabs E. whose free extremities can be folded over the female head when the cover is in position, thus keeping it secure. A handle F of the usual type may be attached to the cover, if desired.
The female head is of such shape and size relative to the male head that when the cover is placed in position it binds hard all around, the reason being that the two heads are somewhat elastic. that. is their outer edges can be forced apart and together.
The tabs keep the cover from being knocked out when any extra strain is put on it and because of the shape of the beads the inner bearing surfaces at II. H. cannot; be destroyed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;-
In comhination with a can having a straight upper edge of a separate head having its outer edge turned upwardly at right angles to the main portion to form a flange for engaging with the upper edge. of the can, said head having a central aperture and the edge of the head around said aperture being bent into inverted U form to form an elastic hollow head. a cover for said aperture having: its periphery bent to form an elastic bead corresponding in shape to the bead on the head and adapted to tit over the same, tabs adapted to tit over the said beads and a handle secured on the cover, the said handle and beads being of less height than the outer flange of the head.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
\VAL'IER ASHBY MITCHELL.
