Description

110.8953351.V PATENTE) AUGH, 1908.'
LM. HICKS. MEANS POR SEALING VBSSELS.
Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. f i
JAMES MILNOR HICKS, OF SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGYOR TO AUTO STOPPER COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEANS IEOR SEALING VESSELS.
Sp eeiic ation of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Application tiled October 16, 1905, .Serial No. 282,943. Renewed January 8, 1908. Serial No. 409,856.
T o all whom it 4may concern.' t
Bc it known that I,J..\.\Ii1s Muzxon Hicks, a citizen of the United States of America., residing at Summit, I'nion county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful.Improvements in Means for Scaling Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for sealing vessels, and it consists in certain elements and combinations fully specified and claimed hereinafter.
In order that persons skilled in the al". to which my invention appertains may understand, construct and use mpinvention, I will proceed t0 describe it referring to the. accompanying drawings forming part of this spec1fication in which Figure 1 illustrates in elevation and part section a sealing cap applied to a vessel by stretching the pendent flange of smaller diameter than the bead upon the vessel neck surrounding its mouth', over said bead in accordance with my patent dated Feb. 21st. 1905, Number 783,038, but with the sealing stopper in the vessel mouth. Fig. 'l illustrates the same after it has been provided with my present invention. Fig. 3 illustrates the cap .in elevation, before being applied to the vessel mouth as in Fig. 1, the same being of smaller internal diameter than the bead B upon the vessel neck. Fig. 4 illustrates the same after the indents F have been made in the cap shown in Figs. 1 and 3. F ig. 5 shows the cap of Fig. 4 in bottom view,
lthe cap being removed.
A is the vessel neck. l B is a bead upon the said neck surrounding the vessel mouth in the marner set out in the patent above referred to.
C is the pendent Aflange to the sealing cap.
D .is the top flat. surface of the ca E is the stopper in the vessel mouth. 1*, Fig. 2 are indents formed in the )endent flange of the said cap beneath the bead B after the cap has been secured upon the vessel, as in Fig. to firmly secure the cap upon the vessel against extraordinary pressure from within thc vessel.
It will be readily seen that as in Fig. 1, the stopper is applied in the bottle mouth and the cap secured over it, the cap resting upon ci ple set out in nl v Patent Number 746,332v
issued Dec. Sth. 1903.
It is immaterial how the indents F are pretluced as ity is well known in the art.-
It is important for the indents F to be made in the cap flange while the said flange is securely held cireumferentially in order A that the distorting of the metal of the flange b v forming the indents may not distort the remainder of the flange and tend to loosen the grip of the flange over and under the bead B.
Xo further description is needed to elucidate the invention contained herein.
Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I have embodied it what I claim as new and as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Means for sealing vessels, 'which consists in a vessel having a nec-k and a circumferential bead near its top; a sealing cap having a top surface and a flange pendent from said top surface of a diameter relative to the dialneter of said circumferential bead upon the vessel neck, that the said cap flange when on the said vessel will closely and elastically contact with said bead and gri i firmly beneath said bead, portions of said flange cont-acting under said bead, being turned under after the said cap has been pressed upon the vessel to its full limit, whereby a `firm grip under said bead is obtained substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this thirteenth day of October 1905.
JAMES MILNOR HICKS.
