No. d859,705.
I Specication of Letters Patent 'Application mea umh 1o'. 19o?. serial No. 362,592.
To all whom it may concem:v f i Be it known that I, J Mns A'.' STRUTHERs, of Minne- 4 apolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota,l have invented certain new and useul Improvements inn Undergarthe garment is in use.
ments, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved aps or gores designed particularly for the seat opening of union undergarments, which can vbe easily reached with both hands and will not gap open while -The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter d ascribed and particularly pointed out in the claims;
In the laccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of 'a union undergarnient embodying my invention. Fig, 2 is a rear view of the same. v In the drawing, 2 represents the garment of knitted fabric having the' open front 3 and seat opening 4f :5
`and 6 are gores or flaps also of knitted fabric, the former gore being stitched at 7 and 8 to the garment on one side of the opening, leaving an unstitched portion 9 extending betw'eenf' the stitched portions'. lThe lower portion of the gore extends through the crotch of the 'garment and is secured to the leg portion atthefr'ont,
as indicated in` Fig. 1-. The other gore 6 'is stitched to the garment onA the other side oi the seat-opening. with the stitching extending continuously from the top` to the bottom, and the lower portion of the gore ,elel
tending under-the crotch of the garment to the forward vleg portion corresponding to the manner of securing the gore 5 as described. The free edge of the gore 6 is .adapted to pass' between the garment andthe unstitched portion 9 of vthe gore 5 when the gores are lapped by one another, and in this position isstitched to the garment or fastened by the button 10. y A similar fastening on the other side of `the seat opening secures the edge of the flap 5 .to that side of the garment. The
opening through the `unstitclied portion of tlie flap 5 allows the hand to be inserted for the purpose of straightening the iiaps, and both handsl maybe used,"
in securing the free edges of the fiaps to the garment ,i
Ordinarily one of these iiaps is covered by the outer-Y` one and no means oi securing its loose edge is provided.`
There is thus always danger of the loose inner iiap rolling up or gaping and exposing the person i The gores may be made of. any suitable size and their shape may be varied',` provided the opening is left at the edge of the outer gore through which access to the under one may be had. Instead of having the opening formed between one edge of thogore 5 and the o'straightening or fastening. This also would be within the scope of my presentinvention, the essen? Patented .my 9,1907.
addition to the seat opening through which the endv l of the gore may be reachedand pulled for the purpose!` tial feature of which is the arrangement o the gores s o i I 4that access maybe had tothe loose edgeof the gore as well as to the outer gore.
1 claim as my invention.

'and havingva'n intermediate unsecured portion forming an opening through which the hand may be inserted, the, other gore being'secured to the garment on the other side of the s eat openingfandsaid goreshaving free edges arranged to lap by one another, and the tree ledge of said second named gore extending through the opening formed between the garment and the unsecured portion of said iii-st named gore, and means for attaching the free edges of,
said gores to the garment. i
.4. An undergarment having a seat opening and 'gol-@sofy flaps secured to the garment at the sides o! said opening and having loose edges that are adapted to'iapby one an y I other, and means for? securing the said .edges tothe garf ment and said edges being exposed when fastened, where- .imboth hands may be usedin fastening` or untas'ten-inj v An undergarment having r'useitt opening and'overiapping gores'or naps therefor, thouppei' portion of the cuter gore being secured to thegarmentnbove the seat opening, und the lower portion of the outer gore being l'ecured to the garment at one sident .the saidseat opening, an intermediate unsecured portion being formed and the under gore being attached to the garment on the opposite side of the sent opening from the other-gore and having a' pai-t projecting through the openingformed' iiy the, unse j cured portion of said outer gore.

A union under-garment having a 4seat opening und goi'es 5 and '6 therefor, the gore 5 being attached to the 5. between its upper and lower edgesY and forming an openginglthrough which the hand may be inserted, and the gore 6, and the gore G haring a free edge to extend acrossthe v10 seat opening and being accessible through the opening formed by the unsecured portion of the gore 5.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set m'y hand this 11th day of March 1907.`
garment at its upper edge above the seat opening and the lower portion of said gore extending through the crotch of the garment nndvbeing secured to the ieg portion thereof, there 'being an intermediate unsecured portion of said gore JAMES A.' STRUTHERS.
G being secured to the gnrment on the other side of the Witnesses: I p sent openingr from the unsecured portion of the gore 5, RI'CHARDPAUL,
and the gore 5 I apping by the secured portion of the gore J. B. ERA.
