HOSE-SUPPORTER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed February 5 1906. Serial No. 299,442.
To all Lu/b01111 it 1nd concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT B. MosEs, a
. citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hose-Supporters, of which the following is a description.
, The object I have in view is the production of a device for supportin stockings, which is particularly applicable children, and which may be readily adjusted to fit wearers of different sizes, may be put on or taken off easily, and which will be comfortable in wearing and hygienic in use. I obtained these objects by the mechanism I and in which the lines 44 of Fig. 1.
Figure 1. is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, showing a portion detached. Fig. 2 .is a perspective view of a modification. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in section, taken on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view in section taken on In all of the views, like parts are designated by the same reference characters.
In carrying out my invention, I provided the usual garters, 1, 1, which are preferably made of elastic material, and are provided at their lower extremities with attachments 2 engaging with and supporting thestockings. These garters are connected to and supported by an arrangement of straps which passes over the shoulders of the wearer, and is connected to a belt. In Fig. 1, the strap arrangement consists of the two straps, 3 and 4, which pass up the front of the wearer over the shoulders, and unite together in a single strap, 5, at the back. The strap 5, as
well as the straps 3 and 4, are connected to a belt 6. The belt 6 is preferably made of elastic material, as shown, while the other straps, except the garters, are preferably made of inelastic material. The straps 3 and 4 are permanently secured to the belt 6, adjacent to the free ends thereof, and the belt is completed and the ends secured together by means of a clasp such as 7. This clasp is preferably located between the points of attachlnent of the straps 3 and 4. An additional clasp 8 connects the two straps 3 and 4, together, at a point above the belt, so that when in use, the shoulder straps will lead in the proper direction.
for women and for buckles 12.
In order to permit the deviceto be adj usted, the straps 3 and 4 below the belt are provided with the take-up buckles 9, and above the belt with the take-up buckles 10. The two halves of the clasp 8-8 are preferably formed upon the plates 11, having slots for the passage of the loops in the straps 3 and '4,
. which are interrupted at thesep'lates, pass through the slots, and the ends secured to the take-up buckleslO.
The upperportion of the straps 3 and 4, which pass over the shoulders, are also shown as provided with take-up buckles 12.
These straps pass through slots in the plate 11, and their free ends connect with the At the back, the belt is shown as passing through slots or openings, so that the plate may be slid. along the belt to any desired position. If desired, a take-up buckle, as 14, maybe applied in the back-piece 5, the piece passing through the I end secured to the take-up buckle.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the two garters are secured to a single vertical non-elastic support, as 15, by means of two leaders or connecting pieces 16. The strap 15 is provided with one portion of abuckle 17, analogous to the buckle 8'8 in the structureshown in Fig. l, which engages with the other portion of the clasp 18ycarried upon the other shoulder piece. The adjustment of diameter of the belt 6 in both embodiments, is shown as being made by-means of a takeup buckle 19, to which the free end of the belt is secured, the bight passing through a loop 20. loop 20 directly tion of the clasp 7. In the structure shown in Fig. 1, the loop is attached permanently to the upright strap 4, a second loop 21 being attached adjacent to the same point for engagement with the clasp 7.
In use, the device, when made according to the first modification, may be put on or taken off like a jacket, the clasps 7 and 8 being fastened or unfastened for this purpose. The second modification'may be adjusted in about the same manner. The direct downward pull uponthe garters is taken up partly by the shoulder pieces and partly by the belt. There is a tendency for the rear side of the belt to lift by the upward pulling of the shoulder pieces, but in practice this will be found to be not disadvantageous. The
slot in the plate 13, and its free In the structure shown in Fig. 2, the engages with the other porthe plate 13, through two may be secured at either end to the. piecesq22 923 to the back and front of the belt, respecwith button holes,
.at the back, as shown in'Fig. 1,
rights 3 and 4,.the part 23 being inside of the readily removed when they are not in use, and
I claim is new, and desire to secure for Letters greater or total part ofthe strain may be shifted to the belt or the shoulder pieces by proper adjustment of the straps.
. The device may be readily adjusted to fit difierent sized wearers, so that but a single size of device need be made. The absence of loose ends is an advantage and the ability to adjust the device in all directions is important. r
In addition to the devices already de scribed, I may attach the two pieces 22 and tively. .Each piece is shown as'being semicircular in outline, and is preferably made of cloth, with two straps, 24.24, attached thereto. The ends of the strapsare provided W 25, and near the point of attachment to the cloth, with buttons 26, but this means of attachment maybemodified, if desired. The pieces are attached, one by bending the straps 24 around the belt and buttoning them in lace. By putting astra on each side of t e fitting, 1.3, the piece wi 1 be alined in proper position. The piece 23 is preferably applied after the supporter is in place, by attachment to the front, the straps E k-24 being placed around the belt on each side of the upgarter supports. These attachments are used for the support of a catamenial bandage which and 23, by means of a safety pin or other suitable device. These attachments may be also for purposes of cleaning.
Having now described my invention, what Patent, is l 1. As a new article of manufacture, a hoseand connected to the belt in the front and supporter having a belt and garters, and
shoulder supports supporting the garters,
back, and pieces for attaching a catamenial bandage, each of which comprises a piece of cloth provided with" straps, each of the said straps having a hole at the end and a button near the point of attachment of the strap to the cloth, the said pieces being removably securedto the beltadjacent to the shoulder supports in the front and back, each two straps on each piece being on opposite sides of the shoulder support.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a piece for attachment to the belt of a hose supporter, which comprises apiece of cloth provided with straps, each of the said straps having a hole at the end and a button near the point of attachment of the strap to the cloth.
3. Asa new article of manufacture, a hose supporter having an adjustable, elastic belt open in front and closed by a fastener, a single adjustable, non-elastic back member secured to thebelt on a slide so as tobe ad justable to the middle of the back of the wearer independently of the adjustment of the length of the belt, a pair of adjustable,-
'nonelastic shoulder straps secured to the back member, the free ends of the shoulder straps being connected to the belt adjacent to the ends thereof and terminating in elastic garters, means for adjusting the lengths of the ends of the shoulder straps between the garters and belt, means for fastening the shoulder straps together in front ofthe wearer above the belt, and meansfor adjusting the position of the fastening means.
This specification signed and witnessed this 29th day of January, 1906.
HERBERT B. MOSES.
