Description

No. 856,779. PATENTED JUNE 11, 1907. A. HELLER & J. ROMAN.
OIL GUARD FOR SEWING MACHINES. APPLIOATION rum) JUNE 30,19oe.
UNITED STATES T OFFICE.
ABRAHAM HELLER AND JOSEPH ROMAN, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
OIL-GUARD FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed June 30,1906. erial No- 324,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ABRAHAM HELLER and JOSEPH ROMAN, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-G uards for Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in guards or fenders for the hand wheel of sewing machines.
In sewing machines, especially where used in factories, the machine is freely lubricated, and during the rapid rotation of the hand wheel the oil is oftentimes bespattered on the fabrics being sewed, and also on the spool of thread. This is particularly undesirable where silks and silk threads are being used, and the object of the present invention is to protect the goods being stitched from becoming soiled.
To more clearly understand the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the same, in which like letters designate the same parts in the two views, and in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of a machine employing my guard, and Fig. 2 1s a front perspective view of the guard itself.
1 designates the machine, 2 the fly or hand Wheel thereof, 3 the spindle for the thread, and 4 the guide for leading the thread from the spool to the needle.
6 designates my improved guard or attachment, which comprises a vertically disposed plate curved at its upper end and extending peripherally at the rear of the hand wheel to act as a guard or fender for any flying particles of oil. This plate is preferably made of resilient enameled metal, which may be readily cleaned, and is of a width just suflicient to catch any flying particles of oil without in any way taking the light off the machine. The guard is held in its upright position by means of the arm or plate 7, rigidly secured at the base of the guard and extending at right angles therefrom. This arm is provided at its outer end with a horizontally disposed slot 8, in which works a set screw 9 engaging an angle plate 10, firmly secured. to the bed of the machine. it will thus be seen that my guard may be readily adjusted toward or away from the wheel, and at the same time be held rigidly in vertical position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a sewing machine, of an angle plate secured to the bed thereof, a set screw operating in said angle plate, and an upright guard or fender disposed adjacent the hand wheel of said machine at the rear thereof, and provided with a lateral arm slotted. to cooperate with said set screw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
