H. MEYERS.
V SPOOL HOLDER FOR SEWING MACHINES. No. 387,852. Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ HIENERIE MEYERS, OF RUSH CITY, MINNESOTA.
SPOOL-HOLDER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,852, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed August 24, 1885. Serial No. 175,242. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIENERIE MEYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rush City, in the county of Ghisago and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders for Sewing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. V
The object of my invention is to provide a spool-holder for sewing-machines, adapted to protect and inclose the spool, and having a thread-slot of such construction that while the thread may be readily drawn into the same it will not be liable to escape and will draw regularly and evenly from the spool, regardless of the size of the latter or whether there be much or little thread thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my spool-holder, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same.
My spoolholder consists of a cylindrical case, A, of any suitable material as metal, papier-mach, wood, &c.-0f proper dimension to contain spools of thread of any sizes ordinarily used on sewing machines. This case A is provided with a curved and recurved thread-slot, B, preferably extending to the upper edge of the case, so that the thread may be readily drawn into said slot, without the trouble of passing the end thereof through the slot, and to still further facilitate this threading operation the top or mouth of the slot is pref erably made flaring, as shown. By making this thread-slot curved and recurved, as shown, it is obvious that the thread cannot readily escape therefrom in the jarring incidental to the rapid running of the machine or in the jerking of the thread due to the manipulation thereof by the take-up-of the machine; and, moreover, it has been found that with this form of slot the thread draws evenly from the spool whatever may be the size of the latter, or whether there be much or little thread thereon, so that the liability of breaking the needle by reason of an uneven draft of the thread is reduced to a minimum.
The case A is provided at its bottom with a central hole, 0, through which the ordinary spool-pin of the machine can pass up into the spool in the usual manner when the device is in operative position on the machine, and when in such position the lower end of the curved and recurved slot, which is some distance above the bottom of the case, will effectually prevent the thread from dropping down below the spool, in which position it is liable to become entangled with the'spool-pin or other part of the machine.
I am aware that a sewing-machine spoolholder consisting of a cylindrical case providedwith a thread-slot and a hole in its bottom for a spool-pin is not new, and I do not, therefore, wish to be understood as claiming the same, broadly; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spool-holder for sewing machines, consisting of a cylindrical case provided with a curved and recurved thread-slot, open to the top of the case and terminating at its lower end above the bottom of the said case, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HIENERI E MEYERS.
