Be it known that I, HARRIET C. FIELDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holder Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to spool-holders for sewing-machines and the object thereof is to provide an im proved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with the ordinary upright spindle which is usually formed on or connected with the horizontal arm of the sewing-machine and on which thespool is usually mounted, a further object being to provide an improved thread-holder by means of which the too fast unwinding of the thread and the consequent kinking and twisting thereof and tightening around the spindle are avoided.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a part of the arm of a sewing-machine and showing my improved thread-holder connected therewith, part of the holder being shown in section; Fig. 2, a plan view of the holder detached; Fig. 3, a front view of the holder, and Fig. 4 a back View thereof. In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a part of the arm of a sewing-machine, which is provided with the upright spindle on which the spool of thread is usually placed, and in the practice of my invention I provide a spool-holder 7, which is connected with the spindle 6.

The spool-holder 7 consists of a casing which is open at the top, which is preferably rectangular in form and provided with a bottom 8, which is triangular in cross-section, and the front thereof is provided with a vertical slot .9, the lower end of which is provided with an angular extension 10, at the end of which is a circular opening 11, through which the thread 12 passes.

In practice the spool 13 is dropped into the casing 7 and the thread is carried outwardly through the slot 9 and connected with the needle in the usual manner, and secured to the back of the holder 7 is a block 14:, which is preferably circular in form and in which are formed Vertical and transverse grooves 15, and at opposite sides of the block 14 are setscrews 16, on which is mounted a plate 17, and between the plate 17 and the block 14 are spiral springs 18.

In practice the spindle 6 is passed through the vertical grooves 15 and between the plate 17 and the block 14, or, if said spindle projects at an angle, it may be passed through the transverse groove 15, and by this means my attachment is designed to be connected with a horizontal or vertical support or spindle, it being understood that the spindle 6 is sometimes arranged vertically and sometim es horizontally.

Bymeans of this device the unnecessary unwinding of the thread is avoided, as it will be understood that in unwinding the thread the spool is only turned as the thread is pulled therefrom, the weight of the spool resting in the bottom of the holder preventing the too fast unwinding of the thread and its tightening around the spindle.

My improvement is simple in construction and operation and is also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spool-holder consisting of a receptacle having an open top, parallel end, and side Walls, and a bottom comprising two angular pieces forming continuations of the sides, and a slot in one of the sides, substantially as set forth.
