NEEDLE-CLAMP AND THREAD-GUIDE FQR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,657, dated September 11, 1883.

Be it known that I, JoHN H. OSBORN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle- Olamps and Thread-Guides for Sewing'Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide the clamp by which the needle is secured to the needle-bar of a sewing-machine with a self- -threading thread-guide, which, while it may be cheaply manufactured, is neat in appearance and efficient in operation. I attain this object by recessing or grooving the head of the clamping-bolt horizontally from itsperiphery to a point near its center, and-then securing to said head a thread-guide so formed as to furnish a guide-eye near the center of said head, through which guide-eye the thread can pass, the thread-guide, from said guideeye outward, being bent into the horizontal groove, to .prevent the escape of the thread from the guide-eye. The end of the threadguide is preferably extended slightly beyond the periphery of the head of the clamping-bolt to facilitate threading.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to similar parts in the different figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in its preferred form in operative relation to the needle and needle-bar of a sewing-machine. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively vertical and horizontal sections of the same.

periphery of said head to a point near the center thereof. A thread-guide, F, preferably of wire, and bent to form a guide-eye, f, is secured in the head of the clamping-bolt, and the portion of said thread-guide extending outward from the guide-eye f is bent down into the recess or groove 6, to prevent the es cape of the thread from the guide-eye. The guide-eye f is arranged near the center of the head of the clamping-bolt, so that the thread will not be diverted from its proper course in its passage to the eye of the needle. The free end of the thread-guide F is preferably ex tended beyond the periphery of the head E of the clamping-bolt to facilitate threading. A small pin, 6 secured to the head of the clamping-bolt and entering a hole in the lower end of the needle-bar, prevents said bolt from turning with the thumb-nut D. p

In threading my device the. thread is drawn beneath the free end of the guide F and along the horizontal recess or groove e into the guide-eyef, through which it can pass freely to the eye of the needle.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a needle-clamping bolt the head of which is provided with a horizontal recess extending from the periphery thereof to a point near its center, of a thread-guide secured to said bolt and bent to form a guide-eye near the center of the head thereof, that portion of said thread-guide ex tending outward from said guide-eye being arranged in said horizontal recess, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

2. The combination, with a needle-clamping bolt the head of which is provided with a horizontal recess extending from the periphery thereof to a point near its center, of a thread-guide secured to said bolt and bent to form a guide-eye near the center of the head thereof, that portion of said thread-guide extending outward from said guide-eye being arranged in said horizontal recess, and the extremity of said thread-guide being extended beyond the periphery of the head of the clamping-bolt, substantially as set forth.
