Description

J. A. PREY. NEEDLE THREADER FOR SEWING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 2, 1913- Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
' x v OYPHOTO-U" JOHN .A. rnn r, or sion'x CITY, IOWA.
NEEDLE-THREADER FOB SEWING-MACHINES.
Application filed September 2, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN A. FREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of W'oodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Threaders for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for threading sewing-machine needles.
The invention has for its primary object the production of a device of this class inexpensive and simple in construction and thoroughly efficient in operation.
Another object is the construction of an article of this class readily adjustable and applicable to any type of sewing-machine.
With these and other objects in view, the invention, consisting in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts, will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,-
Figure l is a front elevation of the preferred embodiment of my device attached to a sewing-machine head; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the device of my invention, a portion being cut away; Fig. l is a plan view of the same; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section of the arm with threading-hook attached.
In the illustrations 7 is a machine head equipped with the usual presser-bar 8 and needle-bar 9, carrying a needle, 10.
The preferred embodiment of my device comprises a bracket, 11, formed integrally with, and extending laterally from a collar, 12, adapted to be freely mounted upon the presser-bar, 8. The said collar is preferably of spring metal and split longitudinally whereby play between the collar and presser-bar is prevented. A collar, 13, provided to encircle the presser-bar and adapted to be secured thereon by a set-screw, 14, or otherwise, serves as a stop which prevents downward displacement of the bracket.
15 is an extension, which overlaps the end of the bracket and is secured thereto by Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Serial No. 787,714.
screws, 16, which pass through a horizontal slot, 17, and into the bracket, 11. The bracket-extens1on is provided with a forwardly-extending flange, 18, adapted to support the needle-bar and provided with a slot, 19, to admit the shank of the needle, as will presently be made clear. The extension also has a downwardly extended portion from which depends an arm, 20, having a forwardly-extending portion formed with an upwardly turned end, 21, bifurcated to receive the needle. The arm, 20, overlaps the bracket-extension and is adjustably secured thereto by screws, 22, which pass through a slot, 23, in the arm 20 and into the bracket-extension.
24: is the needle-threading-hook extendmg forwardly from and threaded into the arm near the angled end. The curved portion 21, serves as a guard to prevent the goods which are being sewed from being engaged by the threading-hook.
In applying the device the bracket is so adjusted that the hook, 24, and the needle are the same distance from the presser-bar. The sleeve, 12, is then adjusted vertically so that when the needle-bar is at its extreme upper position and the bracket swung to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bracket-flange, 18, will pass immediately under the needle-bar and thereby prevent downward movement of the latter. The arm, 20, is then so adjusted that the threading hook will pass through the eye of the needle.
The operation of the device is readily apparent. The bracket is first swung forwardly until the hook extends through the eye, the thread, represented by dotted lines 25 in Fig. 1, looped over the. threadinghook and the bracket then retracted.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
A device of the class described comprising, in combination with the presser-bar, a bracket including a sleeve of spring metal, split longitudinally and encircling the presser-bar, an arm extending laterally therefrom, an extension plate overlapping and secured to said arm for adjustment toward or from the presser-bar, and having a portion depending from its outer end, a second plate depending from and adjustable vertically upon said portion, said second In testimony whereof I have thereunto plate having its lower end bent forwardly signed my name in presence of two Witat right-angles and the extreme end thereof nesses.
curved upwardly and bifurcated to receive JOHN A. FREY. 5 the needle, and a threading hook carried Witnesses:
by said second plate and adapted to enter S. CRANDALL,
the eye of the needle. p C. M. DULLSJ Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
