PATENT OFFICE.
- I MINNIE FOSE, OF MANCHESTER, j IOWA.
SEWING-MACHINE GAGE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 31, 1908.
Application filed May 10, 1906. Serial No. 316,197.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE FOsE, a citizeness of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Gages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of ,the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gages for sewing machines, and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical gage adapted for attachment to the foot of a sewing machine and for use in stitching hems, tucks, plaits and doing similar work.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the invention to a sewing machine; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gage, showing it mounted in an improved form of presser foot; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the presserfoot. M
In the practice of my invention, I provide the usual presser foot 1 on the presser bar 2 of a sewing machine, with a rearwardlyprojecting enlargement 3, forming a heel in which is formed a transversely-extending slot 4 for the attachment of the gage. The latter comprises an elongated right-angular gage portion or head 5 L-shaped in cross sec tion, and an adjustable bar or member 6, which projects at right angles from the top of the head 5 L-shaped in cross section midway of its length to provide for the use of the gage on either side of the presser foot to support said gage in position parallel with the foot and projecting therebeyond at both the front and the rear, said gage being held in the same relative position when disposed on either side of the presser foot. This bar 6 may be of any desired length and is adapted to project through and slide in the slot 4,
so as to adjust the gage head 5 toward and fromthe needle of the machine. The head 5 is adapted to have the lower edge of its vertical flange 7 rest upon the top of the machine, and it is adjustable toward and from the needle and presser foot 1 according to the size of the hem, tuck, or plait, which is to be stitched, or according to the distance at which it is desired to place the row of stitching, from the edge of the fabric.
The adjusting and supporting bar 6 is clamped in the slot 4 by a set-screw 8, so that the gage will be securely held in an adjusted position,
It will be seen that the gagemay be used upon either side of the presser foot, and that when it is not desired, to use the same, it may be quickly removed from the presser foot.
It is to be noted that owing to the gage head being elongated, a bearing edge is presented toward the work, whereby a more clearly defined score mark is produced upon the work, and at the same time, the bar 6 is prevented from twisting or bending, which would obviously result in throwing the head out of proper alinement with the line of travel of the presser foot.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the. accompanying drawings, the 'oonstructionand operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
In combination with a detachable presser foot having an enlarged heel extending in of the foot with a slot extending transversely through said heel, of a gage member adjustably mounted in said slot and comprising an elongated head L-sha ed in cross section, a bar secured at one on to said head midway its length to provide for the reversal of said gage to adapt it for use on either side of the foot, said bar being connected to support approximately the same plane as the body Y said head With one arm or flange thereof in my hand in presence of two subscribing? vertical position, arid its free edige 1adapted witnesses; to rest on t e mac ine top, an( tie outer 0 1 face of the other arm arranged in a horizontal MINNIE 5 plane, and means for holding said bar in Witnesses:
adjusted position in said slot. ENNIs Booos,
- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set IDA M. SNOWDEN.
