NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR `SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,206, dated March 5, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
We, HARRY C. Geom-:ICE and FRANK HENRY, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure l is a perspective; Fig. 2, a view of the under side. Fig. 3 shows the form of the blank from which the part a of Figs. l and 2 is made.
Our invention consists in making a device by the use of which, in connection With a sewing-machine, the two edges of a narrow strip of cloth can be turned under and'held in place by a line of stitching, forming a desirable trimming for dresses and other articles.
In the drawing, a represents the essential part of our device secured to a piece of metal, b, so formed that it can be attached to the presser-bar of a sewing-machine, the foot having been iirst removed. This piece a can be made from a single piece of thin sheet metal out in the form shown in Fig. 3, and afterward bent or stamped, as shown in Fig. 2, the part c forming a tongue, around the end of which the two points d e are bent, as shown, leaving a sufficient space for the passage of the cloth, Which is to be inserted through the opening f at the outer end of the device. In
the part b on the under side, and Where a is secured thereto, is a recess to permit the folded cloth to pass freely. iis a hole for the passage of the needle.
In passing through the device, one edge of the cloth will be first turned under by the point d, While the other edge will be also turned under by the point e,- and, the sewing-machine being in operation, a line of stitching will be formed in the center of the material, forming a fine trimming, tubular in form.
Since the deviceis connected with the presser-bar, and not with the bed of the machine, the trimming can be seWed upon any garment or other article at the same time that the trimming is made, which Will usually be done; but the trimming can be made in strips, and after- Ward sewed upon the garment by hand .or otherwise.
The essential part of section a of our device can be so constructed that it can be attached to the ordinary presser-foot of a lsewing-machine.
What We claim as new is as follows:
The attachment for sewing-machines herein described, constructed and operating', to form a tubular trimming, substantially as and for the purposes specied.
