F. DE 0. MARTIN.- FINGER GUARD FOR SEWING MACHINES. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 26., 1913 1,@91,363 -.Patented ar;-24,- 19-14 FERDINAND DE CRAIG MARTIN, OF BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI.
FINGER-GUARD FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 721", H. 14.
Application filed June 26, 1913. Serial No. 77 .881.
Y '0 ZZZ 10720222 it may cont-6m:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND Dr. CRAIG Manrix, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biloxi, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Fingcr-( Tuards for Sewing-Machines of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presser foot attachments for sewing machines, and pertains especially to a finger guard made with, formed on, or attached to the presser foot and hemmer, or other foot of a sewing machine. I
The object of the invention is to provide the ordinary presser footand hemmer foot with a linger guard of such novel and pecnliar shape or construction as to prevent the fingers of the operator coming in contact with the machine needle, during the opera tiqn of the machine.
"jfl'i further object of the invention is to provide a. finger guard of such novel and peculiar construction relative to a hemmer or presscr foot as to permit the sewing thread to be grasped and pulled as usual, and having such shape as not to obscure or obstruct the view of the working needle and the stitching or heniniing work.
In the acconnianying drawings forming part of this application z-Figure is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of a presser foot showing the guard. view of the guard and presser foot. Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective view of a presser foot and t 'uardv Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The sewing machine table 1, head 1 needle 2. bar 1 the presser foot bar 3, and the attachment for the prcsser. foot 4 are such as may be found in common use,'and are only employed to exemplify the invention.
The prc ser foot 4 is of the usual shape and construction, having a short prong 5.
3 is a frontand a long prong G, with the needle slot T between the prongs.
Thoguard is substantially U-shaped and comprises a flange 8, formed on or soldered to the outer edge of the prong G, and projecting vertically therefrom a continuation of the flange 8 extends around the end of the prong 6 so as to form a vertical bowed front portion 9, and a curved wing 1.0 projects inwardly from the bowed portion 9.- The wing 10 is' tapered or increases in width from its juncture with the bowed portion 9, so as to form a wide or flaring end 11, and a sight space or opening '12, atthe front of the guard and between the prong 5 and the wing. The edge 13 of the bowed portion 0 extends vertically from the inner cdge o't' the end of the prong 0 to the juncture of the bowed portion 9 and the wing 10, so that the view of the needle and the material under operation is not obscured or interfered with, and so that the operator may readily catch the thread close up to the foot without interference of the guard. The flared portion of the wing over-laps the end of the prong 5 and terminates above said end in the same plane with the rear edge of the flange 8, so as to leave a space or openii'ig between the attaching arm let of the presser foot and the rear edge of the wing and the flange, whereby the work and the thread may be viewed and operated as usual.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 5 the guard 15 extends across the face of the heminer foot 16, in front ofthe path of movement of the needle, and has inturned ends. Said guard is connected with and held above the foot. by means of a vertical guard portion 17, so as to leave an opening or space 18 between the foot and the guard.
It is obvious that the invention may be further modified mechanically for use on presser feet of various charm er, and that the guard and foot may be made together, or the guards may be made separately and soldered or otherwise attached to the feet in common use.
I do not wish to be Understood as confining the invention to any particular size or material, nor to any particular presser foot formed on one side of the foot, and a wing of sewing machines, but reserve to myself bowed from the upper portion of the flange the right to make such changes in the guard across the front of the foot and terminating and its application may come Within the in a free end above the foot.
5 scope of the appended claim. In- Witness whereof I hereunto set my 15 Having thus described my invention What hand'in the presence of two witnesses. I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- FERDINAND DE CRAIG MARTIN. ters Patent is v Vitnesses':
A finger guard for the resser foot of LISETTE PosT Bnown,
1O sewing machines, comprising a flange A. S. GNERFLO.
