CORDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES. I

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,415, dated November 20, 1894.

Be it known that I, PAUL SCHOEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cording Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has for its object to provide a cording attachment for use with two-needle sewing machines, said attachment being so constructed that it is adapted to fold the two opposite edges of a strip of cloth around two cords guided to the two needles of the ma chine, and also to fold in the opposite edges of asecond strip of cloth guided to the stitchng mechanisms above the first-named strip 1n such a manner that the stitches will pass through the in-turned edges of the upper strip and through the in-turned edges of the lower strip, securing the edges of the last-named or cord-inclosing strip beneath the edges of the in-turned edges of the narrower upper strip in such a manner as to securely cover the cords; the two strips with theoovered cords being at the same sewing operation attached to any desired piece of work, as to a rufile, and the ruffle attached to a garment, if desired. In performing work of the character just described the lower or cord-inclosing strip will preferably be of a color having a pleasing contrast to the upper strip and also to the work to which the said strips and inclosed cords are secured, thereby giving a pleasing effect to the double corded work.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved cording device, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are bottom, side and longit-udinal sectional views, respectively, of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross sections on lines 55, 6-6, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a front end view looking in the line of the arrow 7 in Fig. 3, and Fig. Sis a detail diagrammatic view to illustrate the work performed by my attachment.

A denotes a presser foot provided with two needle holes a, and with an attachment shank a, said presser foot being provided on its under side with grooves C62. Attached to the toe of the presser foot are two strip-guides b and c, the former being for the upper strip and the latter for the lower strip, the said lower strip-guide being wider than the said upper strip-guide. Both of these strip-guides are made in the form of flattened tubes, and are preferably cut away or partly open on their upper faces, so as to expose the strips passing through them when the device is in operation, and they are both made somewhat tapering rearwardly and are turned over at their rear portions to form hemmers to turn in the opposite edges of the strips.

The hemmers or hem turning parts I) of the strip guide b are turned inward and upward so as to turn in the two opposite edges of the upper strip downward, while the hemmers or hem turners c of the lower strip guide a are turned over inward and downward so as to turn in the edges of the lower strip upward.

Arranged between the upper and lowerstrip guides are two cord guiding devices or tubes 61 which are extended partly within the edgeturning portions 0 of the lower strip-guide c in such a manner that the edges of the lower strip, which are turned inward upwardly, will be wrapped around the cords passing through the said cord-guides or cord-guiding tubes d, said tubes being preferably arranged to diverge from each other rearwardly so as to deliver the cords passing through them closely within the inturned' edges of the lower strip. At the forward portion of the lower strip guide 0 are provided two leading-in eyes d for the cords which are to pass through the cord-guiding tu bes cl.

InTEB- operEtTTSf my device, when properly secured in position on the sewing machine, a strip of fabrice is passed through the upper strip guide I) and its edges are turned in downwardly, while a second and somewhat wider strip f is passed through the lower strip guide 0, and its edges are turned in upwardly so as to be wrapped around the two cords g led inward through the eyes d and passing thence through the cord-guiding devices or tubes d, as above stated; said tubes being so located relative to the edge turning portions 0 of the strip guide 0 as to cause the cords delivered therethrough to be infolded within the upturned edges of the lower strip of fabric. The two strips, with their inturned edges and the cords, are so held while being presented to the needles of the two-needle sewing-machine that two rows of stitches at the points denoted by the dotted lines 00, Fig. 8, W111 pass through the edges of the strips e and f, and thus secure the cords which are infolded withln the outer portions of the strip f in place, and at the same time stitch the two strips with their cords to the work i to which they are to be attached. As the work passes forward beneath the presser foot the cords are partly received in the grooves a in the bottom of the latter.

Having thus described my invention, I clatim and desire to secure by Letters Paten 1. A double cording attachment for use wlth two needle sewing machines consisting essentially of upper and lower, rearwardlytapering strip-guides made in the form of iiattened tubes, the said lower strip-guide being somewhat wider than the said upper stripguide, and both of said guides having toward their rear or narrow parts edge-turning portions to form hems or in-tu rned edges for two strips of material passing through them, combined with two cord-guid es arranged between the said strip-guides and so placed as to deliver two cords within the folded edges of the strip passing through the said lower stripguide.

2. A double cording attachment for use with two needle sewing machines consisting essentially of a presser foot and upper and lower, rearwardly-tapering strip-guides secured to the toe portion of the said presserfoot and made in the form of flattened tubes, the said lower strip-guide being somewhat wider than the said upper strip-guide, and both of said guides having toward their rear or narrow parts edge-turning portions to form hems or in-turned edges for two strips of material passing through them, combined with two cord-guides arranged between the said strip-guides, and so placed as to deliver two cords within the folded edges of the strip passing through the said lower strip-guide.

3. A double cording attachment for use with two needle sewing machines consisting essentially of a presser foot and upper and lower, rearwardly-tapering strip-guides secured to the toe portion of the said presser foot and made in the form of flattened tubes, the said lower strip-guide being somewhat wider than the. said upper strip-guide, and both of said guides having toward their rear or narrow parts edge-turning portions to form hems or in'turned edges for two strips of material passing through them, combined with two rearwardly diverging cord-guides arranged between the said strip-guides, and partly within the edge turning portions of the said lower strip-guide, so as to deliver two cords within the folded edges of the strip passing through the said lower strip-guide.
