SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,419, dated November 20, 1894.

Be it known that I, PAUL SCHOEN,acitizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Hemmers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

In making a wide hem or plait at the edge of a piece of fabric or textile material, more or less difficulty has heretofore been experienced in properlyintroducing the goods into the hemming guide by which the material is directed to the needle or needles of the sewing machine, and my invention has for its object to provideahemmerorhemming guide which is adapted to form a wide fold at one edge of the material to be hem med or plaited, and into which hemmer or hemming guide the material may be easily and conveniently introduced in the first instance.

In carrying my invention into effect I provide a base-plate which is adapted for attachment to the work-plate of a sewing machine and which is furnished with a hemmei1 or hemming guide consisting of two plates or leaves hinged together and one of which is hinged to the said base plate, the outer of the said plates, or the one thereof which is hinged to its fellow, having a turned-over or doubled portion, one edge of which is inclined or diagonal to the guiding edges of the hemmer so as to act as a folder to turn the material as it passes through the liemming guide. Thus in introducing the materialinto my irnproved hemming guide the latter is unfolded on its hinges and the material is placed thereon with the edge of the material beneath the turned-over portion of the outer hinged plate or leaf of the hemming guide, and the said outer hinged leaf is then turned over on the other hinged leaf of the guide, and the latter is then turned over on' the base-plate of the guide, thus causing the material to be doubly folded for the formation of a wide hem or plait; and when the material is started into the sewing machine and drawn forward through the hemming guide it will be constantly folded for the formation of the wide hem or plait.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan view of my improved hemmer or hemming guide with the hinged leaves thereof folded down on each other. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly unfolded, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the same, fully unfolded. Fig. et is a section on line 4 4.- of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a diagram illustrating the work as folded with my improved hemmer.

A denotes the base-plate of the attachment provided with an arm a having a slot a for the reception of a set screw by which the attachment may be adjnstably secured to the Work-plate of asewing'machine. To the baseplate A is hinged, at b, a plate or leaf B, and to the free edge of the said plate or leaf B is hinged, at c, a plate or leaf C provided with an overhanging or turned-over portion or lip c' the edge c2 of which is inclined or diagonal relative to the hinges and guiding edges of the said plates or leaves B and C, the rear part of the turned-over portion or lip c', or that part thereof which comes nearest to the needle or needles of the machine, being wider than the forward part thereof.

The width of the hem or plait to be formed is determined by the width of the leaf O, the free or inner edge of which is straight and parallel to the hinges Z) and c to guide the material straight to the needle or needles of the sewing machine.

When, in the use of my improved hemming guide, the goods are to be introduced therein, the same is fully unfolded, as shown in Fig. 3, and the material a, (denoted by dotted lines, Fig. 3) is then laid thereon with the raw edge of the material inserted beneath the overhanging part or lip c of the hinged leaf O, and the said hinged leaf O is then folded down on the leaf B, making one fold in the material, and the said leaf B, with the leafv O folded against it, is then folded down upon the base-plate A, making a double fold or plait x' in the material as represented by the diagram, Fig. 5. With the lnaterial thus placed in the hemmer and folded, as stated, the machine may be started and the material will be constantly folded and guided to the needle or needles of the sewing machine, my improved hemming guide being more particularly intended for use with a two-needle sewing machine which forms two rows of stitches near the opposite edges of the wide IOO hem or plait; but it will, of course, be understood that the attachment is adapted for use with a single needle machine by which the hem may be secured by a single roW of stitches, or by two successively formed rows of stitches.

My improved hemming guide or plait-former is intended for use only with material, as plain muslin, which is alike on both sides.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A sewing machine hemmer or hemm'ing guide consisting of a base plate,a plate or leaf hinged directlyand permanently to said base plate, and a second leaf hinged to the rst-named leaf and of a Width equal to the width of the hem or plait to be formed, said second leaf having a straight free or inner edge parallel With the hinges of the two leaves, and said second leaf having also an overhanging lip or portion provided with a diagonal or inclined edge.

`2. The combination with the base plate A having the arm a provided with the slot a', of the plate or leaf B hinged directly and permanently at b to the said base plate,and the plate or leaf C hinged at c to the said plate B and of a width equal to the Width of the hem or plait to be formed, said leaf C having a straight free or inner edge which is parallel to the hinges b and c and having also the overhanging lip or portion c provided with the inclined or diagonal edge c2.
