To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN SMEJA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for sewing machines more particularly intended for use in sewing together three pieces of fabric, where one piece is to have a hem turned down over an intermediate piece, such as a stiffening member, and a third piece is to be stitched to the hem of the first piece to cover said hem and form a lining or facing therefor, the third piece having an inturned hem made by turning said piece down on itself at the line of stitching by which it is secured to the hem of the first piece so that it will not present a raw edge.

The attachment is particularly' adapted for use in making the waist-band of trousers wherein the cloth is provided with a hem embracing the upper marginal part of the stiflening member and the hem of the lining or facing member is attached to the hem of the cloth member near the line of the fold forming the hem in the cloth.

The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a fragmentary view showing the attachment in place secured to the throat-plate of a sewing machine, the presser-foot bar being shown in cross-section; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the improved attachment in a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, 10 indicates the base of a sewing machine head; 11 the presser-foot bar having a foot 11, which, in this case, is provided with two laterally spaced holes or openings 11b for the passage of two needles; 11c the reciprocating needle-bar and 11d the needles carried thereby.

12 indicates the throat-plate of the machine and 13 my improved attachment as a whole, which is attached to said throatplate.

The improved attachment has a base-plate 14 provided on one side near each end with transversely extending slots 14, 14, for the insertion of screws 14, by means of which it is attached to the throat-plate in such manner as to be capable of lateral adjustment as a whole toward or away from the needlebar. Said base-plate is cut away at one side to provide a needle opening 14c so arranged that when the attachment is in place, the base-plate will not extend into the path of the needles.

A longitudinal upright shoulder 15 is provided intermediate the lateral edges of the base-plate, said shoulder extending alongside of the needle opening and having preferably an overhanging flange 15:L extending parallel to the base-plate and being vertically spaced therefrom. As shown herein, said shoulder and flange are formed by means of a separate plate 16 which is secured to the base-plate 14 in such a manner that the same may be adjusted laterally to determine the position of the shoulder 15 for the purpose presently to be described. Said plate 16 has a part 16a which bears upon the base-plate 14, a vertical longitudinally extending flange which constitutes the upright shoulder 15, and an offset part which constitutes the overhanging flange 15a. The part 16L of said plate 16 is provided with transversely extending slots 1Gb, 16h, in which engage guiding lugs 16 secured to and projecting upwardly from the base-plate 14 and have sliding bearing in said slots. Other transverse slots 16d are formed in the plate 16 through which extend screws 17 which rise from the baseplate and on which are threaded fly-nuts 18 by means of which the plate 16 is clamped to the base-plate 14. Near the lateral edge of the base-plate 14 opposite the shoulder 15 is formed a second shoulder 19 which terminates at the needle opening and is provided with an overhanging flange 19, which is parallel to and spaced from the base-plate 14. On the inner edge of the flange 19a is formed an upright longitudinal shoulder 20 which extends parallel to the shoulder 19. Said shoulder is formed by a flange which has a transversely curved part 20a near the end of the base-plate for convenience in guiding the edges of the pieces of fabric that are to be supported by the overhanging flange 19a, as presently to be described, into engagement with the said shoulder 2f).

To illustrate the manner in which my improved attachment is to be used I will describe it as used in the sewing together of4 the three pieces usually comprised in the waist-band of a pair of trousers, namely, the outer cloth member, the intermediate stiE- ening member, about one edge of which the hem of the cloth member is turned, and the lining or facing member, which has a hem stitched to the hem of the cloth member.

In the drawings, 25 indicates the lining member, 26 the cloth member, and 27 the stiffening member.

The plate 16 is adjusted on the base-plate 14 so that the distance between the longitudinal upright shoulders 19 and 15 is equal to the width of the stiffening member 27. The stiffening member is then fed between said longitudinal shoulders 19 and 15 underneath the overhanging flanges 19*l and 15ZL and the lining member 25 is placed on top of the cloth member 26 and the edges of the two brought into engagement with the upright shoulder 20 rising from the overhanging flange 19a. The three pieces are then fed to the needles, the several shoulders 19, 20 and 15 guiding the pieces to the needles and holding them in proper spaced relation so that the lines of stitching attaching them together fall intermediate the overlapping margins of the said pieces. The three pieces are thus attached together as described in my application led December 26, 1911, Serial No. 667 ,6041, after which the cloth member may be folded down about the edge of the lining member, and the lining member may be folded upon itself along the line of stitching adjacent the edge of the lining member, as described in said application.

While in describing one embodiment of my invention, I have referred to certain details of mechanical construction and arrangement, it is to be understood that my invention is in no way limited thereby except as pointed out in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. An attachment for sewing machines comprising a base-plate provided at one side with a needle-opening, means providing an upright longitudinal shoulder rising from said base-plate and extending alongside of said needle-opening, means providing a second upright longitudinal shoulder laterally spaced from said first shoulder and terminating at or near said needleopening, the second named shoulder having a flange overhanging the space between said shoulders, and means providing a third upright longitudinal shoulder rising from said overhanging flange and spaced intermediate the first two named shoulders.

2. An attachment for sewing machines comprising a base-plate provided at one side with a needle-opening, means providying an upright longitudinal shoulder rising from said-base-plate and extending alongside of said needle-opening, means providing a second upright longitudinal shoulder laterally spaced from said first shoulder and terminating at or near said needle-opening, the second named shoulder having a flange overhanging the space between said shoulders, means providing a third upright longitudinal shoulder rising from said overhanging flange and spaced intermediate the first two named shoulders, and means for adjusting the distance between the first two named shoulders.

8. An attachment for sewing machines comprising a base-plate provided at one side with a needle-opening, means providing an upright longitudinal shoulder rising from said base-plate, said shouldler having an overhanging flange and extending alongside of said needle-opening, means providing a second upright longitudinal shoulder laterallyspaced from said first shoulder and terminating at or near said needle-opening, the second named shoulder having a flange overhanging the space between said shoulders, and means providing a third upright longitudinal shoulder rising from said lastnamed overhanging flange and spaced intermediate the first two named shoulders.
