IMPROVEMENT IN RUFFLING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,755, dated May 31, 1870.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. LEsLIE, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Ruflier for SewingMachines 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved ruffler, shown in position upon the presserfoot of a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the ruftler detached from the presserfoot. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same through the line 02 :10, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the line 3 y, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.

My invention relates to ruffiiug attachments for sewing-machines; and consists in the construction of the same, as hereinafter more fully described.

. In the accompanying drawing, A is the base or bottom plate of the ruffler, beneath which the cloth passes in contact with the feed of the machine. This plate is doubled upon itself, as shown, to form the top plate, B, beneath which the band of the ruffle passes. The bend or connected side of these two plates is formed upon the inner edge, so that the two edges to b are separated from each other a short distance, as shown in Fig. 4. If desired, the plates A B, instead of being made of one piece doubled upon itself, may be formed of two pieces secured together by suitable means, so that a space shall be left between them from the point of connection between the two to the edges a b, as previously mentioned. C is a third plate, firmly secured at one edge to the inner side of the plate B, for the purpose of attaching the ruffler to the presserfoot of the machine. This is accomplished by sliding the foot D between the plates B C, the latter possessing sufficient elasticity to clamp the presser-foot in position against vertical displacement.

The sides of the presser-foot bear against the lugs (2, formed upon the outer edge of the plate B, and the downward-projecting lug 0, formed upon the plate C. This arrangement prevents the lateral displacement of the ruffler upon the presser-foot.

f is a lug turned down upon one side of the plate C, and bearing against the plate B. This forms a stop against which the shorter portion or shoulder g of the presser-foot bears, to prevent the ruffler from being forced too far upon said foot.

The plates A C are out out or notched at h, to coincide with the perforation '5, formed in the plate B for the passage of the needle.

It will, of course, be understood that the needle also passes through the presser-foot, and that the ruflier, by being attached thereto in the manner above described, insures the certainty of the needle passing through all the parts.

The operation is as follows: The ruftler hav 'ing been attached to the foot, the latter is let down, with the plateA resting upon the cloth to be ruffled. The band to which the ruffle is sewed is then placed between the plates A B, first being passed through the guide-slot j in the lower plate, in the usual manner. Instead of the plate B of the ruffler pressing upon the band, as in the 'rufflers heretofore constructed, the pressure of the foot D is distributed upon the lower plate, A, through-its peculiar connection with the plate B, and the pressure of the latter upon the band avoided.

It is, therefore, apparent that the band will pass through the ruffler without interruption and unnecessary friction, because the band is not stretched while being stitched to the cloth, and does not, therefore, contract after the sewing has been completed. 7

m is a pin secured to the lower plate, A, and extending upward through as lot formed in the plate B, for the purpose of steadyin g the latter plate, which is more or less elastic.

It is sometimes necessary or desirable to form ruffles upon two sides of the band, particularly in shirt-bosoms, and this cannot be done without passing the cloth twice through the ruffler.

In order to prevent the rear edge of the bot- I tom plate from catching in the ruffles first formed, it is turned up, as shown at 0, out of the way of the ruffling.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The doubled plate A B, constructed, as described, with the guiding-pin m, and combined with the yielding plate 0, secured to the part B, the parts 0 B being constructed substantially as described, to receive a resser-foot, and for the purpose specified.
