PRESSEB-FOOT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Jan; 12, 11%15.
Application filed May 5. 1908. Serial No. 430,898.
To o7? whom it may con ocrn iic it known that I, RUSSEL G. NOOD- wann, a citizen of the United States. residing at Wankegan. in the county of Lake, State of Illinois. ha re invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Feet for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description. reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a presser foot for sewing machines, and more especially a presser foot for a sewing machine for covering the edge of a fabric, such as carpets or other heavy materials.
An object of the invention is to provide a prcsser foot with a tape-guiding means, which positions the tape relative to the stitching point. so that the same may be prcperlv secured to the fabric by overseaming stitches.
'lurther object of my invention is to provide a presser foot with a finger. over which the overseaming stitches may he formed, and with a tape guide for guiding a tape. so that said tape will be led underneath the stitch finger and the over edge stitches laid around the tape.
Still further objects of my invention will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
in the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of my invention. Figure 1 is a top plan view of the pi'csser foot having my improved mechanism applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end view of the same; Fig. 4 is a side view of the presser foot, showing the manner of guiding the tape and securing the same to the fabric; Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the foot, also showing one position of the elements of one form of the stitching mechanism; Fig. (Sis a detail perspective view of the tape guide and stitch linger: Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the same; and Fig. 8 is a modification showing a different form of guiding slot.
The presser foot 1 may be of any desired construction, and may be secured in any manner to the presser bar 2-. In the present illustration of my invention. I have shown the presser foot 1 as formed integrally with the clamping arm 3. which secures said foot to the lower end of the presser bar.
The presser foot is cut out, as at 4 to form a needle slot. The uppc fare r the presser foot is provided with a recess in which fits an arm 5, which is slotted at 6, and adjustably secured to the presser foot by means of a screw 7. Said arm 5 is provided with a downwardly extending lip 8, in which is formed a slot 9 for guiding a tape T. A stitch finger 10 is secured to the arm 5 and lip 8, and projects rearwardly, so that the stitches of an overseaming mechanism may be laid over said stitch finger. The lip 8, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is preferably so disposed as to extend below the plane of the material being stitched, so that a tape being led through a guiding slot 9. will extend equally above and below the fabric being covered. The tape after passing through the slot 9, passes behind the stitch finger 10, and as the threads of the overseaming mechanism are laid over the stitch finger, the same serve to turn down the edges of the tape on to the upper and lower faces of the fabric. and encircle the tape, and thus secure the same to the fabric.
As shown for example in Fig. 5. the needle 11 penetrates the fabric at the inner edge of the tape T, and a thread-carrying looper 12 enters the needle loop beneath the fabric. and passes beyond the outer edge of the fabric, where a fish-tail spreader 13 engages the looper thread loop. and carries the same around the edge of the fabric into position to be entered by a needle 11., It is obvious, however, that if the tape be of sufficient width, the needle maypenetrate the inner edges of the same.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 8, the tape-guiding slot 14, is curved. so that as the tape passes therethrough. the edges thereof will be folded. so as to assist the threads of the overstitehing mechanism in properly turning down and securing the tape to the edge of the fabric.
It will be noted that the tape guide is adjustable with the stitch finger. and that these parts may be adjusted so as to determine the width of the over stitch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a presser foot, a downwardly projecting member carried thereby, a tape guide formed in said memher, and a stitch finger carried by said member and located between the sides of the tape guide, whereby a tape may be guided behind said stitch finger.
2. The combination of a presser foot, a
stitch finger carrie thereby, of means for guiding a tape behind said stitch finger, said means for guiding a tape behind said stitch finger, said tape guiding means extending above and below the lower surface of the presser foot, whereby said tape may be covered by over-seaming stitches.
4. The combination-of a presser foot, a lip carried by said presser foot and projecting below the lower surface thereof, said lip having an opening therethrough, whereby a tape may be guided through said opening to the rear face of said lip, the opening in said lip extending from a point above the lower face of the presser foot to a point below the same.
5. The combination of a presser foot, a lip carried by said presser foot and projecting below the lower surface of the presser foot, tape-guiding means carried by said lip, said tape-guiding means extending above and below the lower surface of the presser foot, and a stitch finger carried by said lip and located in rear of said tape-guiding means.
6. The combination of a presser foot, a lip carried by said presser foot and projecting below the lower surface thereof, said lip having an opening therethrough, whereby a tape may be guided through said opening to the rearface of said lip, the opening in said lip extending from'a point above the lower face of the presser foot to a point below the same, an arm to which said lip is attached, and means for adjustably securing said arm to the presser foot.
-7. The combination of a presser foot, an arm adjustably secured thereto, a depending lip carried by said arm tape-guiding means carried by said lip, and a stitch finger carried by said lip and located in rear of the tape-guiding means.
8. The combination of a presser foot, a depending lip carried thereby, said lip having a .vertical slot extendingabove and below the lower face of the presser foot for guiding the tape.
9. The combination of a presser foot, a
depending lip carried thereby, said lip having a vertical slot extending above and below the lower face of the presser foot for guiding the tape, and a stitch finger located in rear of said slot, whereby the tape is guided in rear of the stitch finger.
10. The combination of a presser foot, an arm adjustably secured thereto, a depending lip carried by said arm, said depending lip having a vertical slot extending above and below the lower face of the presser foot for guiding the tape, and a stitch finger carried by said arm and located in rear of said slot, whereby a tape may be guided in rear of said stitch finger.
11. The combination of a presser foot having a needle hole, a stitch-laying tongue to one side and extending beyond the needle hole, a tape-guiding slot arranged in advance of said needle hole, said slot extending above and below the lower face of the presser foot, said tape-guiding slot being also in advance of the stitch-laying tongue.
12. The combination of a presser foot, an
arm adjustably secured thereto, a depending lip carried by said arm, said depending lip having a vertical slot extending above and below the lower face of the presser foot for guiding the tape, and a stitch finger carried by said arm and located in rear of said slot, whereby a tape may be guided in front of the stitch finger, said slot being curved to give an initial fold to the tape.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
