FREDERICK S. PRESCOTT, OF MEREDITH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOLD MEDAL SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF ORANGE, MASS.
ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING -MACHINE PRESSER-FIEET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,074, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed April 7, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK S. PRESCOTT, of Meredith, county of Belknap, State of New Hampshire, haveinvented anew and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Presser-Foot Attachments, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention in sewing-machines has for its object the production of an improved presserfoot attachment, whereby a piece of raw-edged or bias material may be folded at each edge and be laid upon a piping, or upon edging or lace interposed between the said folded strip and the material upon which thefolded strip and piping, 850., are to be stitched.
Figure 1 represents, in perspective, the side and under portion. of a presser-foot having a binder and guide attached to it in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a top view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section of Fig. 2 on the dotted line 00 m, and Fig. 4 a diagram showing the class of work which my improved attachment is adapted to perform.
A is supposed to be a presser-foot of a shape commonly used on the Home and other shuttle sewin g-machines, b being a slot for the passage of the needle.
In accordance with my invention 1 have combined with this presser-foot a double binder, B, it having two lips, 0 0', adapted to receive a bias or raw-edged strip, (1, (see Fig. 4,) of cloth, and turn its edges underneath, as therein shown, laying the said strip horizontally upon the top of a layer of cloth, 0, which may be a dress-skirt or other garment. At the rear of this double binder is placed a guide, f, made as a loop, having a tongue, g, the edge of which terminates at the right of the needle-hole b. This guide is adapted to receive in and about the tongue 0 a bias or raw-edged piece of material, h, and fold and deliver it between the turned edges of the strip (1 and the fabric 0, as at the right of Fig. 4, the needle of the sewing-machine entering the said materials and stitching them to- 5 gether by a line of stitching, as at i. One edge having been stitched, as'described, the fabric 6 may be reversed and the other edge of the folded strip (1, that previously in the lip 0, may be thereafter placed in the control of the lip 0 and be guided to the needle, to be stitched to the fabric e, and with or without the intervention of a piping, h.
If it should be desired, a piece of edging, or lace, or fringe, as at I, (see left of Fig. 4,) may be placed between the fabric 0 and the folded edge of the strip d.
I am aware that a hemmer has been applied to a presserfoot, in connection with a guide, to deliver a piece of edging or folded material between the parts of the fabric forming a hem, the said fabric being turned upward and over about the edge of the edging.
I claim The presser-foot A and attached binder, hav- 6 5 ing the lips c 0, combined with the guide, to receive and lay a piping or edging between the material rested upon the cloth-supporting bed and the downwardly and inwardly turned edge of the strip of material folded by the binder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERIGK S. PRESCOTT.
