Description

PATENTED DEC. 24, 1907.
J. B. WRIGHT.
' GUIDE FOR OVEREDGE SEWING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 9, 1906.
gilt l rt illhiltlilt JAMES B. WRIGHT, OF NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR TO WILLCOX AND GIBBS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATIOB- OF NEW YORK GUIDE FOR OVEREDGE fiEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 190'].
Application filed May 9. 1906. Serial No. 315349.
To all whom it may concern.
Be i" known that I, JAMES B. Winen'r, a citizen of the United States of America, re-' siding in the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Guide for Overcdge si n ing-ltiachines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of my invention is to provide; an overedgin'g sewing machine with an unp them bent back until the overseam stitches proved construction of edge guide, which will facilitate the overedging of carpets or like fabrics havin )ro'cctin thread ends or J h I" -whiskers to be covered up. by the over seani stitches.
in the accompanying drawings I have shown mymventionasapplied to the Willcox and (libbs overseam sewing machine known as the overlock and forms of which are shown in Patents 472,094 and 472,095.
Figure 1 is a plan View of sullicient of the machine to show the application of my in vention thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the presser foot, with'edge guide; and Fig. 4 is aperspectivc viewof the needle hole plate with part of edge guide attached.
The cloth plate 5 of the machinecarries a needle hole plate 6, which is slotted at 7 for the feed dog and at 8 for the passage of the looper J, as usual. The needle arm 10 and needle ll and presserfoot arm 12 may also be'ol' usual construction.
The presser foot arm 12 carries at its front end a presser foot 13, which is provided on. its right hand side with a deep pendent flange ll inclined to the direction of the feed of the goods. A correspondingly inclined slot 15 is formed in the needle hole plate, as shown in Fig. 4, to receive this flange 14, which forms the edge guide for the goods to be ut'tl'hfllliltll. This llange does not extend quite to the chaining linger 17 which is carried by the presser foot because the carrying forward of the [hinge [4 to the chaining [ingel would necessitate the. cutting of the slot 15 through to the slot 8, and so weaken the needle hole plate too much. I, therefore, secure to the surface of the plate 6, by a screw 18, or otherwise, a piece 19, which has an edge 20, who adjacent to that part of the presser foot which forms the base of. the chaining linger and immediately beyond the edge guide ll (Fig. 3 This edge 20 thus coniines the thread ends of the fabric in their bzuzkwardly projecting position into which they have been bent by the edge 14, as the fabric is fed through the machine, and keeps have beenformed around them to cover and bind them in place. The upper side of th presser l'oot may be providedn'ith a cord guide 21 to be also covered-in by the overseam stitches. I prefer also to provide on the side of the upright guard plate 22, usually employed on the overlook machine, a horizontal guard plate 23 at a suitable distance above the cloth plate to prevent the overedged carpet or other fabric from curling upwards as it passes out from under the presser foot.
1 claim as my invention 1. The combination of the needle and looper of an overseaniing machine with a presser foot having an inclined edgeguide, a needle hole plate slotted for the passage of the looper and inclined edge guide, together with a second edge guide immediately-l eyond the inclined guide and attached to the needle hole plate, substantially as describe f,
2. 'she combination of the needle and loopcr of an overseaming machine with a presser foot having an edge guide, an upright guard plate behind the presser foot and a horizontal guard carried by the upright plate above the cloth plate, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
JAMES B. WRIGHT.
