To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RUDOLF Lone, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Process of Embroidering, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to surface fabric ornamentation known as embroidery, more particularly to embroidery mechanically applied to sections of fabric for use as ornamental covers, doilies, center pieces and the like, employed on tables, &c., and the object of my invention is to produce an improved character of eyelet embroidery with stitched edge.

These and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, in which:

Figure 1, is a view illustrating a piece of fabric and a holder for the same; such fabric being shown in course of ornamentation in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, is a perspective view illustrating the manner of effecting the inclosure of the edges of openings formed in such fabric; Fig. 3, is an enlarged plan view of an eyelet or aperture with-its edges bound in accordance with my invention; Fig. 4, is a sectional view of the fabric before the eyelet is bound; Fig. 5, is a sectional view on the line 00'a, Fig. 3, and Fig. 6, is a view of a modified arrangement.

The object of my invention is to produce eyelet or apertured embroiders. To this end a piece of fabric 1 is prepared by slittlng the same as at 2; such fabric being then stretched in an ordinary tambour frame, such as 3, and then by means of a sewing machine employing an oscillating needle, in dicated at 4:, with the usual shuttle, I form stitches 5 on both edges of theslits, as shown in the drawings. Tn forming these stitches, the oscillating needle is employed by the operator to impart slight movement to the said edge, which, of course, owing to the flexing or giving of the goods, will be greater adjacent the middle of the slot so that as a final result, a hole or aperture is formed with its edge bound with stitches formed by the needle and shuttle threads,

which hole may be oval, or elongated in the manner indicated in the drawings. During this operation the needle in forming the stitches 5 catches up a portion of the fabric, as indicated at 6, in Fig. 2, and tucks the same under the edge of the aperture; being completely inclosed by the stitches formed by the needle and shuttle threads. Such caught portion of the fabric serves to stuff the stitched edges of the apertures and acts further as a stiffener for the same.

In the form of embroidery shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the stitches are laid substantially parallel to each other, asclearly indicated by the drawings, while in the form shown in Fig. 6, the fabric has been moved while the stitching is effected so that the stitches are radially disposed.

I claim: a

1. The process of embroidering fabrics, which consists in stretching the fabric, slitting the same, and applying stitches to the edges of the slit portion, the application of said stitches simultaneously pulling the edge of the fabric whereby the slit may be widened and the edge thereof caught up, turned under and inclosed. by the stitches.

2. The process of embroidering fabrics, which consists in stretching the fabric, slitting the same, and applying paralleling stitches to the edges of the slit portion, the application. of said stitches simultaneously pulling the edge of the fabric whereby the slit may be widened and the edge thereof caught up, turned under and inclosed by the stitches.

3. In the formation of eyelet embroidery, the process which consists in stretching the fabric and mounting it in a carrier, slitting said fabric, and applying stitches to the fabric at the margin of-theslits,the application of said stitches simultaneouslypulling and folding the fabric adjacent the slits whereby such portion may be caught under said stitches to stuff the stitched marginal edge or border of said eyelet.
