IMPROVEMENT IN TRIMMINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,807, dated November 18, 1873; application tiled October 17, 1873.

To all whom it may concern.' A

Be it known that I, WILLIAM WALKER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine Hemstitched Fabric, of which the following is a specification:

This invention consists in a new article of manufacture, which may be automatically produced by machinery, and is composed of the two pieces of fabric stitched by parallel rows of stitching; one row being on the edge of each piece, and the two pieces of fabric being united by one or more threads laced into or passing around the threads of the two parallel rows of stitching. Figure 1 represents a face View of the finished article, showing two pieces of fabric united in accordance with the invention to represent hemstitching; and Fig. 2, similar View of the same, on an enlarged scale, in illustration of the arrangement of the threads.

A A are the two pieces of fabric, having two parallel rows of stitching, b b-that is,

one row on the edge of each piece of fabric;

and c c, threads which unite the two pieces of fabric, said threads being laced into or passing4 around the threads of the two parallel rows of stitching b b.

Such an article may be manufactured by a two-needle sewing-machine, substantially as described in another application for patent made by me simultaneously with this, name ly, by introducing the two pieces of fabric through guides, to turn over and fold the edges of the fabric, and direct the same to duplicate needles arranged to act in concert with right and left hand loopers, and with one or more thread leaders or carriers, arranged to receive an independent thread or threads from a suitably-placed spool or spools, and to carry the same across the line of feed above the fabric in front of the needles, from a point on one side of the latter to a point on the opposite side thereof, such action of the threadcarriers taking place in timely relation with the feed, the presser-foot, and the needles, to insure the parallel or edge rows of stitching b b of the two pieces of fabric catching or holding the two threads c o, or either of them, where one only is used, by said threads c c, which are worked by the carriers, and unite the two pieces of fabric, lacing into or passing around the rows b b of stitching, which are worked by the needles and loopers combined.

An article having the appearance of being khemstitched may thus be produced in a very cheap manner, Aand the same be ruffled or plaited, if desired.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- As anew article of manufacture, the trim ming herein described, composed of two pieces of fabric stitched by two parallel rows of stitching-that is, one row along the edge of each piece-and united by one or more threads laced into or passed around the threads of the duplicate rows of stitching, essentially as specified.
