It will be seen in Fig. 9 that the provision of the enlarged aperture 2'! provides for adjustment of the edgeguiding lip 25 toward and from the arbor 2|, thereby to control the amount of body-material used in the edge-fold.
In the operation of the machine it will be understood that the attachment is supported so that the stitch-finger I5 of the work-folding scroll l4 projects above the reciprocatory needle 3, whereby it functions to prevent the stitches S, Fig. 2, from being set too tight, and thereby insures the production of an edge-fold having a very smooth appearance. It will be observed also that, with the present attachment, the body-material is under control to and slightly beyond the point at which the needle 3 penetrates the same.
Obviously this control of the work is desirable and particularly so when stitching flimsy materials, such as silk and the like.
. The machine disclosed is particularly adapted for edge-finishing handkerchiefs which are fed through the machine with the body-material in a substantially vertical position between the feedcup 5 and the opposed presser-member 6.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention what I claim herein is:
1. An edge-folding attachment for overseaming sewing machines comprising an arbor and a scroll member adapted to fold a body-material about said arbor, said scroll member terminating in a stitch-finger about which the edge-fold-securing stitches are formed as the body-material is advanced through the attachment, and means including spaced aprons projecting from said arbor and said scroll members providing between them a work-directing passageway insuring proper entrance of the body-material into the attachment.
2. An edge-folding attachment for sewing machines comprising a plurality of members arranged in stacked relation, the lower member comprising an inverted L-shaped section having one limb thereof extended and formed into a work-folding scroll, a second member substantially U-shaped at one end and terminating in an arbor adapted to cooperate with said scroll, and an upper member provided with means for guiding one edge of a body-material as it is fed through the attachment.

In an overseaming machine, the combination, with stitch-forming mechanism including a reciprocatory needle, and work-feeding means including a feed-up for advancing the work through the machine in a substantially vertical position, of an edge-folding attachment disposed in advance of the work-feeding means, said edgefolding attachment including a work-folding scroll-member disposed closely above said feedcup and terminating in a stitch-finger overlying the line of reciprocation of the needle, and a second member providing an attenuated arbor extending within said scroll-member and adapted to cooperate therewith in hem-folding the marginal edge .of a body-material.
4. An edge-folding attachment for sewing machines comprising a plurality of members arranged in stacked relation, one of said members comprising a substantially U-shaped section having one of the limbs thereof terminating in a lateral supporting flange and the other limb thereof terminating in an arbor, and another of said members comprising an inverted L shaped section having one of the limbs thereof providing a lateral supporting flange and the other limb thereof terminating in a work-folding scroll arranged in cooperative relation with said arbor.
