Be it known that I, Josnrn S. ANTHONY,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at I Newport, in the county of Newport, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands for Revolubly Supporting Articles to be Painted and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stands for revolubly supporting blinds or other articles to be painted, and more particularly to an adjustable stand of this character which may be adapted for use in connection with various sized articles.
Considerable difficulty has been experienced in producing a device of this class upon which the articles may be quickly and easily mounted. To provide for this ready ar rangement of parts my invention consists, broadly speaking, in a pair of stands or uprights which are adjustably connected for movement to and from each other, a rigid spur device carried by one of the members and a pair of movable spur devices carried by the other stand. One of these last-named spur devices is arranged in a line with the rigid spur device and the other is arranged slightly rearwardly of the same, it being understood that the sign or blind is rotated between the first-mentioned spur devices and may be held against such rotation by the last-named device.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan. view, Fig. 3, a detail longitudinal vertical sectional view therethrough, Fig. 4 is an end elevation, Fig. 5 is adetail vertical transverse sectional View through one end of the support, Fig. 6 is a front elevation of one end of the support showing the application ol a slightly modified form of my invention, and, Fig. 7 is a detail vertical sectional view through the said endof the support showing this form of my invention.
As shown in the accompanying drawings the support comprises a pair of stands or uprights 10 and 11, and these stands or uprights are tubular and of inverted Ushaped form and at their lower ends these uprights are provided with tubular legs 12 and 13 respectively which are connected therewith by means of suitable T-joints 14. A screwthreaded cylindrical socket 15 is formed upon the connecting portion of the upright 10 at its middle and is directed downwardly, and a similar socket 16 is formed upon the upright 11 at a corresponding point. Engaged at their upper ends in these sockets, are tubular rods 17 and 18 respectively which are provided at their lower ends also with sockets 19 in which are receigy e d one of the ends of tubular connecting rods 20 which project directly toward each other and in alinement. Telescopically received in the tubular rods 20 and connecting the same is a solid rod 21, there being set screws 22 engaged through the rods 20 and impinging against the rod 21 to hold the same so that the frame members may be adjusted to and from each other.
Formed upon the connecting portion of the upright 10 and directed upwardly is a socket 23 which is similar in construction to the socket 15 and is located directly above the same, and in the socket 23 is received the lower end of a stem 24 which is provided at its upper end with a sharply pointed head 25.
Formed integral with the connecting portion of the upright 11 is a flange or shelf 26, and hinged upon this flange is a similar stem 27 which is also provided at its upper end with a pointed head 28. A wire yoke member 29 is connected with the flange outwardly of the stem 27 for swinging movement and is held tightly against the stem by means of a coiled spring 30, one end of which engages a portion of the yoke and the other end is secured to the flange 26. A similar stem 31 is also hingedly mounted upon the flange and against the same bears a yoke 32 of the same construction as the yoke 29, this yoke 32 being held tightly against the stem 31 by means of a spring 33 which is identical in construction with the spring 30. This stem 31 is also provided with a head 34 which is pointed.
In using my invention the supporting members are adjusted to or from each other so that the signboard or blind to be painted is tightly received between the pointed heads 25 and 28, it being understood that the points of these heads bite into the woodwork of the sign or blind and permit revolution of the said sign to bring it into proper position to be painted. It is understood, of course, that where a number of signboards or blinds of the same length are to be painted, it is not necessary to adjust the support IIO each time one is placed in position but it is only necessary to swing the stem 27 outwardly from the adjacent end of the blind or signboard and insert another one. When it is desired to support the signboard or blind in a horizontal position, the same is swung in this position and the pointed head 34 of the stem 21 engaged therewith.
The stem 31 is provided with a latch 40 pivoted at its upper end as at 41 within a recess in said stem and adjacent its lower end formed with teeth which engage the rear edge of the shelf 26, the latch 40 thus constituting a means for holding the stem 31 at selected positions with relation to its pivot.
In case it should, at times, become necessary to paint articles of less length than that to which my supporting members can be made to approach each other, I have provided a stem 35 which is clearly"shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, and this stem is provided. at its upper end with a horizontally disposed sleeve 36 through which is engaged a rod 37 having a sharply pointed end 38, said rod being held atvarious adjustments by means of a set screw 39 which is engaged through the sleeve.
What is claimed is A device of the type set forth comprising a palr of frames, an adjustable connection therebetween whereby said frames may be spaced at selected distances from one another, a rigid spur member carried centrally of one of said frames, two hinged spurs carried by the other of said frames and pointing oppositely to said first nam d spur, a spring pressed yoke engaging each of said last named spurs, and means for retaining said last named spurs at selected positions about their pivots.
