Be it known that I, Pinnen I). SonnNox, a citizen of the United. States, residing .at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Journal-B oxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the bearing boxes for car wheel journals and the like, and particularly to the closing lid of the same. T he objects of the invention are, to make a more perfect and a practically dust proof fit of the metallic lid closing the opening of the journal box; to provide means for automatically locking the lid in place when closed; to provide means for closely and Jfirmly seating the lid upon the box, and to generally improve the structure and operation of closures for journal boxes. These objects and other advantages which will hereinafter appear, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in a preferred form in the accompanying drawing, wherein* Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the three parts of the journal box closure separated, the journal box being shown in part only;
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section through the mouth of the box and the lid, taken along the line (2 2) in Figure 3 5 Figure 3 is a front elevation of the box with the lid closed and showing in dotted lines the skewed position ofthe same in opening, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section of the lid and mouth of the box on line (4, 4) of Figure 2.
The journal box 5 may be of any desired construction, is formed as usual with a sloping front face, and with the hinge lugs 6 for hinging the lid 7 thereto. The lid 7 is provided with two bearing sleeves S to co-operate with. the lug 6 and receive the hinge-pin 9 as usual. The journal box also has preferably placed on its top a catch lug 10 which co-operatcs with a hook 11 made as part of the lid for the purpose of liiolding the lid lirmly in place when seated as shown in Figure 2.
In the lugs 6 the opening for receiving the hinge-pin 9 is round and i'learly of the size of the pin on one side, 'though fitting it loosely, but on the other it is an elongated slot 12, which allows the pin to play up and down therein. The lid can therefore be turned or laterally twisted. into a skew position., as on a pivot in its bearing, as shown on dotted lines in Figure 3. The spring 13 is provided to press the lid down into place. The mouth of the box is formed around three sid es with a backward sloping bearing surface as shown in Figures 2 and 4, and on the other it has an inward turned flange 15. The lid itself is provided with an inclined seating rib 14 which runs around three sides corresponding with the sloping surface of the mouth of the box, and on the fourth side has an inwardly projecting hooked rib 16 which engages the Linder side of the flange 15 of the box. The sloping surfaces of the box opening and of the rib 14 will cause the lid. to slide sidewise under the influence of the spring and its weight and engage the hooked rib 16 with the ilange 15 on the box.
From the drawings it will be evident that in operation when the lid is brought down turning on the hinge-pin 9, the hook 11 on the lid will strike the upwardly extending lug 10 on the box, and raise the lid on this side, sliding the pin 9 up in the elongated slot 12 of the lug 6, (the other opening in the lug being large enough to allow this), and swinging the lid in a diagonal position temporarily, in order that the hooked rib 16 may engage the inturned flange 15 on the box. At this point the hook 11 slides behind the lug 10 and the whole lid will slide downward and also partially revolve or swing sidewise and seat the rib 16 behind flange 15, being pressed into place by means of the sloping surfaces of the rib 14 under the iniluence of the spring 13 and the weight of the lid. A handle 17 is provided for conveniently manipulating the lid to open it, it being understood that this is done by giving the lid a lateral swing to dislocate the rib 16 from ilange 15, and 'the hook 11 from behind the lug 1. O, whereupon the lid may be turnedup on its hinge as in the ordinary construction.
It will be observed. that by the play of the loose hinge which holds the lid upon the box in both openings of the lug 6 it may have considerable freedom of universal movement to adjust itself so as to iit flatly upon the opening of the journal box and that the sl anting surfaces 14 engaging the slanting surfaces ol" the box, will causo the saine to 'lit tightly in a lixed position and make it practically dust prooi", the lid engaging the opening on the box throughout the entire circuin'li'erence. The opening is easy and the closure will' be automatic when the lid dropped by its IOO own weight and assisted by the spring 13. Other advantages o'l" the devices will readily occur to those lamiliar with the art.

2. A journal box having an inturi'ied l'langc on the side in combination with a lid hinged in its own j'ilane and having a hooked rib to engage said 'llange and lock the lid in place upon the journal box, and means for automatically moving the lid laterally to provide for the engagement of the said hooked rib and flange as the flid is closed., Substantially as described.
3. In combination a box, a lid hinged thereto by means allowing an upward swing ing movement and a sidevvise movement, said box and lid being provided with aV tongue and groove joint along the side, and automatic means to swing the lid sidevvise as it closes and cause an interlocking at the tongue and groove joint.
4. In combination a box having an openu ing provided with a groove along the side of such opening, a lid provided with a tongue along its side and hinged at the ond of' the opening by means 'lnirinittiiig anv upward swiiiiging movcnnent ol: tlle lid and a lateral movement tliereol", and automatic means` to swing the lid sidewise as it closes` and cause the engagement o'l` the said tongue and groove.
5. The combination of a journal box having an. upwardly extended lug, a lid hinged to the box so as to allow a movement lateral to the plane of rotation olE the lid, leaid lid having a depending hook to ride over said lug, said box and lid having (5o-operating looking means operated by said lateral movement to lock the lid in place as it moves to place.
6. A journal box having a slopin g bearing Surface on one side and an inturned 'flange on the'other, in combination with a lid having a corresponding sloping bearing surface and a hooked rib to make a tongue-and-groove joint with said flange, on the other side, said lid being hinged so as to allow an uj'iward swinging movement and a sidewise movement to cause an interlocking with the said flange.
