CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 5, 1915.
Application filed October 9, 1913. Serial No. 794,210.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Bonnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention which constitutes the subject-matter of this application relates to a novel hinging mechanism for securing a closure to a receptacle of more or less general description.
Referring to the drawings, which show the preferred embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 shows a cross-section of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates another embodiment of the invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rotatable hinge as it appears disconnected from the receptacle.
Referring to Fig. 1, the reference numeral 10 designates a receptacle or container of any desired form fitted with a closure 11. This closure is hingedly connected to the receptacle and at the same time capable of rotatable movement relatively thereto. This rotatable hinge comprises a member 12 preferably a lug or flange projecting from the closure pivotally connected to the circumferential member 13. This latter member is adapted to fit loosely and rotatably in a laterally extending groove 14: on the exterior of the receptacle. This arrangement enables me to use a combination locking mechanism in which one or more locking members 15 are employed, preferably in the form of rings and rotatable, on the container, relatively to one another. The closure is provided with retaining catches or projections 23 which serve not only to rotate the ring or rings but also prevent the opening of the box except when the rings and the closure and receptacle are in predetermined relative position. The catches are resiliently mounted so that they may slip past the rings in closing and this permits the receptacle to be closed irrespective of the position of the retaining rings, but is prevented from moving in the opposite direction except when the rings are properly set for that purpose.
with a laterally extending groove 14? on the interior of the receptacle 10. The circumferential member 13 is located in the groove and is thus not only concealed from view but is so located that the unscrupulous are unable to tamper with the same. This construction possesses further merit in enhancing the appearance of the closed receptacle. In this modification the closure is preferably provided with a member or flange 12 pivotally connected to a rod 16, which is in turn pivotally connected to a link 17. This link connects directly with the circular member 13 and it will thus be seen that a turning movement imparted to the closure will be likewise imparted through the aforesaid rod and link to the circumferential member 13 It will also be apparent that when the tumbler rings or looking members 15 are in a predetermined position the closure will be permitted to open and will accordingly take the position illustrated in dotted lines.
The closure 11 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 18. The closure therefore forms two sides of an annular chamber 19 in which the combination locking mechanism is housed, the other two sides of this chamber being defined by the upper lip 20 of the container and the laterally projecting flange 21. The closure in Fig. 2 is also provided with lugs 22 located on opposite sides of the arm 16 when in normal position for the purpose of facilitating the rotation of the closure to unlock the same.
I have not described in detail the specific form of combination locking mechanism as locks of this character are old and I make no claim specifically to this mechanisn'i.
My invention relates more particularly to a closure of the character shown provided with a rotatable hinge connection in combination with a suitable container or other body member, such as a housing for metallic parts, provided with a laterally extending annular groove in which one of the hinge members is rotatably mounted. Also the form of binge closure, and body member in combination with combination locking mechanism.
It is to be understood however that I do not confine myself to the exact constructions shown and described as the same may be departed from in points of detail and other embodiments resorted to without necessarily deviating from the true spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending annular groove, of a combination locking mechanism located in an annular chamber on said receptacle, a closure hingedly connected to said receptacle and provided with retaining catches concealed in said chamber and firmly engaging said locking mechanism, said hinged connection comprising a lug projecting from said closure, and an annular member rotatably mounted in said lat-' erally extending annular groove and pivotally connected to'said lug.
2. In combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending groove, of a combination locking mechanism located in an annular chamber on said receptacle, a closure hingedly connected to said receptacle and provided with retaining catches to engage with said locking mechanism, said hinge connection comprising a lug projecting from said closure and an annular member rotatably mounted in said laterally extending annular groove and connected to said lug.
8. In combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending annular groove, a closure hingedly connected to said receptacle and provided with retaining catches, said closure in conjunction with said receptacle body defining an annular chamber, combination locking means located in said annular chamber and adapted to be engaged by said retaining catch, said hinge connection comprising a lug member projecting from said closure and an annular member connected to said lug and rotatably mounted in said laterally extending annular groove.
at. In combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending annular groove, a closure hingedly connected to said receptacle and provided with retaining catches, said closure in conjunction with said receptacle body defining an annular chamber, combination locking mechanism located in said annular chamber and adapted to be engaged by said retaining catches, said hinge connection comprising a lug member projecting from the bottom of said closure and an annular member rotatably mounted on the interior of said receptacle and connected to said downwardly projecting lug.
In combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending annular groove on the interior wall thereof, of a closure hingedly connected to said receptacle, said hinge connection comprising a lug projecting from said closure and an annular member rotatably mounted in said interior annular groove of the receptacle and connected to said lug.
6. In combination with a receptacle, of a closure hingedly and rotatably connected to said receptacle, said hinge connection comprising a lug projecting from said closure and an annular ring connected to said lug rotatably mounted on the interior of the receptacle.
7. In combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending annular groove on the interior walls thereof, of a closure hingedly connected to said receptacle and provided with resilient retaining catches, said closure and said receptacle defining an annular chamber around the exterior of said receptacle, combimftion locking mechanism located in said chamber adapted to be engaged by said resilient catches, said hinged connection comprising a lug projecting from said closure into the interior of said receptacle, an annular member rotatably mounted in said annular groove, and means pivotally connected to said lug and to said annular member.
8. The combination with a receptacle provided with a laterally extending annular groove, of a combination locking mechanism located in an annular chamber on said receptacle, a closure hingedly and rotatably connected to said receptacle and provided with retaining catches to engage with said locking mechanism and means on said locking mechanism adapted to be engaged by the retaining catches whereby the combination locking mechanism is operated when the closure is rotated, said hinged connection comprising a lug projecting from said closure and an angular member rotatably mounted in said laterally extending ammlar groove and pivotally connected to said lug.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
