Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1S07.
Application filed May 22,1906. Serial No. 318.159.
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, Nrcuoms S. STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in beds, and more particularly to beds to be used in hospitals, and for invalids, and is designed more particularly for the use of por sons afliicted with consumption. r A
It is now well understood that persons al flicted with consumption are much benefited by living in the open air, and this open air treatment is the one that is now generally adopted for the treatment of the disease. It frequently occurs, however, that all persons afflicted with this disease eannotfjtake to this open air treatment.
The object or the present invention is to provide means whereby every person sufl'ering with this malady may, in eil'ect, have the open air treatment in their own homes and at inconsiderable cost. To accomplish this object I have provided a bed that I have termed a window extension bed. This bed is adapted for use in any home or room, but is so constructed that the head-piece thereof may be placed through an open window so that the head and bust of the person thereon may be in the open air.
T 0 these ends the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts 0] the bed as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a view of my improved bed with the several parts thereof in normal position Fig. 2 is a view of my improved bed, showing the parts in adjusted position as they will appear when the head-piece has been thrust through an open window. Fig. 3 is an end view of the bed showing means for anchoring the same to the floor. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through one of the side rails oi the bed and showing a por tion of a tie-rod used to connect the slidable portions of the side-rails of the bed together. Fig. 5 is a broken longitudinal section of one of the side-rails showing a friction roller therein.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the foot-piece oi the bed, which is of the usualgconstruction 2 indicates the head-piece; 3, 3 the side-rails connecting the head-piece and foot-piece, and 4, 4, braces for said head-piece.
The numeral 5 indicates the ordinary spring-surface of the bed, which is secured to the side-rails and the head-piece and footpiece in any suitable or convenient manner.
The numerals 6 and 7 indicate suitable means for anchoring the bed to prevent the person thereon shifting its position.
The numeral 8 indicates an angle-piece or L-shaped bar secured to the lower edge of the side-rail 3, as shown in Fig. 4.
The numeral 9 indicates a slidable piece, L-shape in crosssection, and at its top is provided with an angle-piece or L-shaped bar 10, as shown in Fig. 4. In this slidable piece 9 is mounted one or more friction rollers 11 and are for the purpose of rendering the parts less liable to bind when shifted from or back into normal position. This slidable piece 9 is mounted upon and carried by the side-rail 3, as shown in Fig. 4.
The numeral 12 indicate the head-legs of my improved bed and are secured to the up per ends of the slidable pieces 9 and move therewith. These legs 12 are braced and held in rigid position by the rods 13, 13, and 14, 1e.
The numeral 15 indicates suitable locking pins for holding the parts locked in any de sired position.
This bed, when it is desired to use it in the open air treatment is rolled to a window and set so that the head-piece will be in front of the open window and the head-legs against the wall or window sill, the locking pins 15 are then removed, and the loot oi the bed pushed up, this will project the head of the bed through the window, and the head and bust of the person 011 the bed into the open air. The bed is then fastened in position so that it cannot be displaced.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1 A bed having the head legs thereof indepcndcntly movable with respect to its body, whereby the said legs may be shifted toward the foot of said bed to permit the head-portion of the body thercol to project beyond them.
2. In a bed of the character described, the combination with the bed-body, of a pair 01" legs longitudinally movable with relation thereto, whereby one end of said bed-body may be caused to project beyond said legs.
3. In a bed of the character described, the combination with the body thereof, of a pair of legs independently and longitudinally adjustable with reference to said body, whereby When the adjustable legs are shifted from their normal position a portion of the bed body Will project over and beyond said adjustable legs.
4. In a bed of the character described, the combination with a support, of a bed-body, having a support rigid therewith and carried thereby, slid ably mounted on said first named support and adapted to be adjusted with respect thereto, whereby When the support carried by the bed-body is shifted toward the first named support a portion of said bedbody Will project over and beyond said first mentioned support.
5. In a bed of the character described, the
combination with a set of'loose legs, of a bed body slidably mounted thereon and adapted to be adjusted With respect thereto.
6. In a bed of the character described, the combination With a set of loose legs, of a bed body slidably mounted thereon and capable of being adjusted longitudinally With respect thereto, and means for holding said bed body locked to said legs, either in normal or adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
