To prevent accidental rearward movement of the sliding frame-section when the device is extended into form of a bed, as' shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings, a springactuated latch L, is pivotally mounted within a recess 17, formed in the'inner end of' each part 0. These latches are-normally pressed upwardly by means of leaf springs M, and they are-each provided with a downwardly extended stop m, for engagement with the outer ends of the upper guide rails 4, as shown by Fig. 2, of the drawings. The extended parts of the hooks P, are threaded, and said parts-engage nuts 77, whereby slack may betaken up in the fabric N. The said fabric N, acts as a means for supporting a mattress and bed clothing used when the device is employed as a bed; and as an auxiliary support I employ spiral springs 15, which are mounted on the shelf 14, these prevent sagging of the fabric N, when a mattress is thereon and persons are reclining on said mattress, the device being-used as abed.

When the device is extended to form a bed I provide legs Q, these are mounted on the foot board d, and fold over thereon when the device is used as a sofa, and they are swung into vertical position when the device is extended into bed form.

In the operation and use of the invention, when itis desired to convert the same from its initial or sofa-shape to that of a bed, it is necessary to move the sliding frame section C, forwardly to the fullextent of 'its movement, This action automatically carries the swinging frame-section F, downward and forward into position shown by Fig. 2, of the drawings, with its cross bar G, abutting against the inner ends of the guide rail 4. Then the folding frame-section D, is swung upwardly and outwardly and placed into horizontal position. .The act of swinging said frame-section-D, upwardly releases the latches L, and permits them to automatically engage the gouter ends of the guide rails 4, and further movement of said section D, stretches the supporting fabric N, taut and on a horizontal plane. When reconverting the device, the section D, is first folded over on the sectionC. .This act-ion forces the latches L,

downwardly and admits of the sliding parts being pushed inwardly, whereby the swinging, frame-section F, is swung upwardly into position shown by Fig. 3, of the drawings.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A sofa-bedstead comprisinga box and an extensible framework telescopically engaging said box, said framework comprising a sliding frame-section having an outwardly swinging frame-section, hinged thereto, and an upwardly swinging framesection, and slides pivoted thereto, and guide ways for said slides and sliding section, and guide rail for said upwardly swinging section, and means flexibly connecting said slides and sliding section, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a sofa-bedstead, the combination, with a box having a cushionedback. and end pieces, and horizontal ideways on said end pieces, and upwar ly extended guide rails leading from .said guide ways; of a telescopically connected sliding frame-section engaging saidguide ways and having. an outwardlyswinging frame section hinged to its outer end part, and slides flexibly connected to its inner end part, and an upwardly swinging frame-section pivoted to said slides, said upwardly swinging section comprising side arms and cross bar, said slides engaging said guide ways and said cross bar engaging said guide rails, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a sofa-bedstead, the combination, with a box having a. cushioned back and end pieces, and horizontal guide ways on said end pieces, and rearwardlyand upwardly extended guide rails leading, from said guide ways; of a sliding frame-section tele-' scopically engaging said guide ways, an outwardly swinging frame-section hinged thereto, and a cushioned seat on-said outwardly swinging frame-section, and slides engaging said guide ways, and flexible means comprising chains connecting said slides to said sliding frame-section, and an upwardly swinging frame-section embodying side arms and a cross bar, said side arms pivoted to salid stiides land said cross bar en agln sal e mi s.

I. In a soff b edstead, the combination, with a box having a cushioned back and end pieces, and horizontal guide ways, and rearwardly and upwardly extended guide rails leading from-said guide ways, of a sliding frame-section, the sides of said sliding section having recesses therein, and spring actuated latches vin said recesses, said latches adapted. for locking the sliding frame section in its upwardly extended position, and slides engaging said guide ways, and chains connecting said slides to the inner ends of the sides of the sliding frame-section, whereby said sliding-frame-section has limited sliding movement independently of said slides, and an upwardly swinging framesection embodying side arms and a cross bar, said cross bar having extended ends which engage .said guide rails, and said arms in pivotal engagement with said slides, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a sofa-bedstead, the combination,

- with a box having a cushioned back and end pieces, and horizontal guide ways, and rearwardly and upwardly extended guide rails leading. from said guide ways, and roller bearings insaid guide ways; of a sliding frame-section having its sides in telescopic engagementwith said guide waysand havroller bearings; an outwardly sw nging board of said outwardly swinging section, said latches adapted for locking the frame-section hinged to said slidingframesection and havin a cushioned seat thereon, and a foot boarf extended across its free end, the sides of said sliding section having recesses thereon, and spring actuated latches pivoted within said recesses, said latches having extensions ,for engaging thgr foot ameslidin frame-section in its outwardly extende position, and slides engaging said guide ways, and chains connecting said slides to the inner ends of the sliding framesection, whereby said sliding frame-section has limited sliding movement independently of said slides, and an upwardly swinging slides, and said cross bar engaging said ide rails at its ends, and a woven'wire abric 20 connected at its respective ends to the free s end of the said outwardly swinging framesection and the said cross bar, substantially as shown and described.
