The oriiicle of furniture presented herein comprises two related main parts, towit: a chair or sofa frame and a fclda-lole bed of novel construction adopted thereto and which may be withdrawn entirely therefrom whendesired.

The chair or sofa frame comprises sides or ends 16 and o cushioned back 11 which preferably inclines dowi'iwsrdly and forwardly and leaves a space behind the lower port-ion of same, shown. in Figs. 5 and 6. The sides or ends 10 areshown as solid and in their main part as of less height than the back 11, but these features of the c'ons ruction may be aried at will, since it is commonly known that it is also usual to have the sides or ends 10 and back 11 of the same height and also to have said sides or ends of open or bar construction in their upper portions. The general style of the chair or sofa frame will vary with ihe taste or inclination of the manufacturer.

The chair or sols. frame snugly recoil. between its sides or ends 10 the bed-fran and is equipped with certain features adapt ing it thereto, these being the vertical leaves 12 hinged to the from; edges of said parts 10 and the downwardly and forwardly inclined bars 13 projecting laterally toward each other from the inner sides of the rear edges said parts 10. The lJtHhlilllille or bed-member of'the article of furniture comprises two rectangular side frames 16 affording top rails 1i and legs 15 the aforesaid rear or head bed sec tion l-i hinged to the rear 18 and three main bed-sections 19, 20, 21 hinged to one another iuseries (at 22, The sections 19, 2t}, 21 will preferably be of iron and present an open frame to properly receive the spring 9+ for the mattress 2.3. The mattress 25 will, also preferably be fastened on the spring 24.

The head-section 1-11 is provided at its outer (.iil'lltli's with rollers 28 to engage the aforesaid bars 13, and said-tection in the opcmposilion of the bed is held in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position by means of bars 20 pivotally secured at their upper ends thereto and at their lower ends carrying pivoted shoes 30 slidably held in vertical guides formed by the rear legs 18 and bars 31 secured at their lower ends thereto and at said ends serving as stops to arrest the shoes 30 and thereby enable the bars 25) to support the section '14-. in its dcsined inclined position.

The bed-section 20 is pivotally mounted upon a transverse rod 32 extending between and connecting the front legs 18, and said section 520 is adapted when the bed is e73.- tended, to lie horizontally, as shown in Fig". 5, supported on said rod 32, and, when the bed folded, to stand vertically within the .coniinos of the frames 16, as shown in Fig.

The bars or plates 33 have secured to them angle-bars 13b to which the front rail 15 is secured and whose position is varied in accurdance with the position of the bed sec tion 20, said front rail standing vertically, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 when the article is to be used as a chair or sofa and extending horizontally out of the way, as shown in Figs. The hooks 44: may be manually operated, if preferred, but I prefer to arrange for their automatic operation, in the manner described, or in any other manner which might be deemed desirable.

There are various connections knownto me for operating the hooks 44 by a movement of'the bed section 19, and hence I- do not limit my invention to the employment of the piano wire flexible connections 47.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A chair or sofa bed comprising a main exterior frame having sides anda backinci'nber, and a movable toldable bed adapted to be confined within said exterior frame or extended therefrom. for use a bed and comprising independent side supporting frames withdrmvablc from said main exterior frame, a headsection hinged to said frames and adapted to be turned up into a substantially vertical position behind said back-member" three hinged-together mattress supporting sections the middle one of which is pivotaliy mounted in said side frames so to lie horizontally or stand ver-- tically, means for maintaining said hingedtogether sections in their openhorizontal position and means for sup iiorting' the outer two of said sections from said side frames when the bed is folded; substantially as set forth.
