To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. ENG- LANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Beds and Divans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to convertible beds and divans, and more particularly to what may be designated as a convertible divanette, the object of the invention being to provlde an improved structure of this kind comparatively simple in its construction and operation whereby the same may be readily transformed into a divan or a full length double bed by merely swinging a comparatively light portion of the structure, and which is so constructed that a different side of the stuffed mattress is used for the seat of the divan from that which is used to sleep upon.

In apartments, flats and small rooms where it is necessary to economize space it has become highly desirable to provide furniture which will readily fit such space and not take up too much room and yet which can be utilized in different ways. The ordinary couch bed, being about six feet long, takes up too much space. Consequently the present improvement is devised for the purpose of forming a dlvan which will be an ornament to the room and yet will take up but about four feet of space lengthwise, but which, however, can be opened up so that the same can be utilized as a bed.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the structure 1n the form of a divan; Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the same during its transformation into a double bed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the structure in the form of a full length double bed.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.

This improved divanette comprises a stationary section 2, a back section 3 hinged thereto at one side thereof, a swinging seat section 4 hinged to the stationary section at the opposite side thereof, and a sliding section 5 shiftable into position to form a part of the seat or to receive the front swinging section 4 and support the same, the whole being operated by the swinging of said sec- -tion 4. The stationary section 2 and the sliding section 5 may be made in substantially the same way, each comprising a pair of end frames 6 consisting of cross 01' transverse bars 7 for supporting a suitable spring 8 and legs 9. It is, however, only necessary to provide the sliding section with casters, since the stationary section is normally nonmovable. In the present improvement the end frames of each section are connected by suitable side bars and braces 10, 11 and 12.

The back or back section 3 is hinged to the stationary section 2 at one side thereof and is made 'up of a suitable frame work 13 for the attachment of a suitable spring 14. For supporting this back when in its horizontal position it is provided with a leg 15 at each end pivoted thereto, and each of which legs is connected by a link 16 with one of the legs of the stationary section, the linkage connection being such that on the raising of the back the legs will be folded close to the back and on lowering the same they will be opened up and rest upon the floor to support such back.

The swinging section 4 comprises a bar 17, preferably of integral structure, pivotally connected at its free ends to the front side of the stationary section, and this bar carries a stuffed mattress a, which may have an ornamental covering on one side, which is exposed when the structure is in the form of a divan as in Fig. 2, and a tick covering 19 on the opposite side, which is exposed when the structure is in the form of a bed as in Fig. 3. This section a of the mattress is connected or attached along its inner edge, as at 20, to another section b of the stuffed mattress, which forms the mattress for the stationary section, and which section b of the mattress is in turn connected with the section 0 forming the back and which likewise may have an ornamental covering. The bar 17 is connected by links 22 and 23 with the rear side of the sliding section 5, whereby the latter may be shifted from under the stationary section into position to receive the stuffed mattress a thereby to form a bed or under the stationary section to form a divan. For simultaneously shifting the back with the sliding section when the bar 17 is manipulated the back is connected by a lever 24 and link 25 with the sliding section, whereby as the sliding section is shifted forward or backward by means of the bar 17 the back will be lowered or raised. To facilitate the operation of the back suitable helical springs 26 are used, connected with the lever 24 and the rear legs of the stationary section.

From the foregoing it will be observed that when the bar 17 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the stuffed mattress section a carried thereby rests over that section I) of the mattress which is carried by the stationary section, while the sliding section 5 is under the spring of the stationary section. Then, however, the bar 17 is swung upward into the position shown in Fig. 2 the sliding section 5 is shifted forward and the back is shifted downward, so that when the bar 17 is swung downward into the position shown in F ig. 3 the sliding sect-ion 5 has been shifted sufliciently forward into position to receive and support the mattress section a, while the back has been shifted downward to be supported upon the floor by means of its legs, thus forming a six-foot length double bed. A reversal of this operation immediately converts the structure into a divan, as shown in Fig. 1.

I claim as my invention:

1. A divanette comprising a stationary or seat section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said stationary section, a swinging front section hinged to said stationary section, and means connecting the swinging front section, the sliding section and the back section whereby on shifting one of said members the structure will be converted either into a double bed or a divan.

2. A divanette comprising a stationary or seat section, a sliding section movable thereunder, a swinging back section hinged to said stationary section, a swinging front section hinged to the opposite side of said stationary section and linkage connection between the swinging front section, the sliding section and the back section whereby on shifting one of said sections the structure will be converted into a double bed or a divan.

3. A divanette comprising a stationary or seat section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said stationary section, a swinging front section hinged to said stationary section, means connecting the swinging front section, the sliding section and the back sect-ion whereby on shifting one of said members the structure will be converted either into a double bed or a divan, and means linked to the stationary section for supporting the back section when in its lowered position.

4. A divanette comprising stationary supporting means, a shiftable or sliding section, a back section hinged to said supporting means,-aswinging front section also hinged to said supporting means, and the sliding section shiftable relatively to said supporting means into position to the front thereof to receive the swinging front section.

5. A divanette comprising stationary supporting means, a shiftable or sliding section, a back section hinged to said supporting means a swinging front section also hinged to said supporting means, the sliding section shiftable relatively to said supporting means into position to the front thereof to receive the swinging front section, and means connecting the swinging front section, the slid-c ing section and the back section whereby on shifting one of said sections the structure will be converted into a double bedor a divan.

6. A divanette comprising a stationaryor seat section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said stationary section, a swinging front section hinged to said stationary section, means connecting the front section with the sliding section,-and means connecting the sliding section with the back whereby on shifting one of said sections the structure will be converted into a, double bed or a divan.

7. A divanette comprising a stationary or seat section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said stationarysection, a swinging front section hinged'to said stationary section, means connecting the front section with the sliding section, means connecting the sliding section with theback section whereby on shifting one of'said sec; tions the structure will be converted into a double bed or a divan, and foldable l-egsconnected with the back section.

8. A divanette comprising a stationaryor. seat section carrying a spring, a sliding section carrylng a spring, a swinging back section hinged to said stationary section at one side thereof and also carrying a spring, foldable means carried bythe back section for. supporting it when in its lowered position, a swinging front section comprising a bar pivotally connected to said stationary section at the front side thereof and carrying a reversible mattress, linkage connection between said bar and the sliding section, and linkage connection between the sliding sec tion and the swinging back section whereby on swinging said bar the sliding section will be shifted and the back section raised' or lowered.

9. A divanette comprising a stationary or seat section carrying a spring, a slidingsection carrying a spring, a swinging backsection hinged to said stationary section at one side thereof and also carrying a spring, foldable means carried by the back section for supporting it when in its lowered position, a swinging front section comprising a bar pivotally connected to said stationary .sec-
