SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,607, dated May 21, 1895.

Be it known that I, JOHN BOYD, ot Boston, in the county of Suffolk and StateA of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of furniture known as sofa beds, which'are convertible at will from sofas into beds and vice versa.

One object of the present inventionis to economize in the matter of upholstery by the use of a reversible mattress having one side finished in more elegant material than the other so that when the article is adjusted as a sofa the finer side of the mattress will be eX- posed, and when adjusted as a bed this tiner side is protected by reversal of the mattress and that side of the latter is uppermost which is best suited for bed-use. While accomplishing this object a neat appearance of the article is maintained, and convenience of manipulation provided for.

To this end, the invention consists in the novel construction of parts recited in the appended claim.

The accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, illustrate an embodiment of the invention.

Figure 1 shows a rear perspective view of a portion of a sofa-bed constructed in accordance with the invention, as it appears when adjusted as a sofa. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the mattress.

The frame of the device is in two sections, a and b, the former mounted on legs, d', and the latter hinged to the back-edge of the secupright as shown in Figsnl and 2, or to extend horizontally in the plane of the section, a.. The two sections are connected by hinges, each composed of two members, c, and, c', of angular form with the pintle passed through the extremities of the outstanding arms. A ratchet prop, d, is hinged to the member, c, and the member, c', is suitably formed for the engagement of the ratchet-teeth d', so that by this means the back-section, b, may be sustained in an upright position. A cushion is mounted on the frame of the device and is made in sections to correspond therewith.

This cushion comprises spiral springs, c, and coverings, e', extending over the springs and attachedto the frame. A

mattress, f, covers the cushion and this mattress is reversible, one side of it being finished for the sofa and the other for the bed'. A skirt is attached to the edges of the mattress and when the device isradjusted as a sofa, this skirt is stretched across the cushion and forms an edge piece covering the same. The skirt is carried under the sectional frame and is equipped with eyes, f2, which take over studs, f3, projecting in rows from the underside of the frame'. This arrangement provides both for ncatness in appearance and convenience of manipulation, for the studs are virtually concealed from view and yet are easy of access when-the mattress-skirts are to be connected with or disconnected from them. The ends of the frame section, a, are closed by boards, a3, which are suitably finished and to which trimmings are applied as shown.

The skirt hereinbefore mentioned comprises a ap, g, for the front of the sofa-seat, and fiaps, g and g2, for the top and ends of the sofa-back.l This arrangement of aps gives the device a finished appearance as a sofa so that there is no suggestion of its capability of conversion into a bed.

The flaps will be of the material of the sofaside of the mattress and by having them not only stretched across the spring-cushion but also carried over onto the back of the frame, all suggestion of the device being anything but a sofa is avoided. The particular arrangement of the iiaps has been adopted with this object in view, tor it will be seen that by carrying the skirt over three sides of the backsection of the mattress, the ends as well as the top of the frame, b, are covered, and the continuity of the skirt between the top and ends gives a finished appearance. The flaps, g2, it will be noticed terminate so as not to interfere in any way with the movement of the hinged section of the frame.

When the device is adjusted as a bed the section, b, is supported by folding legs, h, held IOO out by braces, 72. (Only one set of these applianoes is shown but it will be understood that there is another set at the other end.)

The arm-rests, c', of the sofa will be made detachable. This being a common expedient no special illustration is given.

What I claim as my invention isas follows:

A sofa-bed comprising in its construction a foundation frame composed of two sections hinged together one mounted on legs and constituting the seat-portion of the sofaframe and having a row of studs projecting. from its under side along the front, and the other frame-section movable on the` hinge from a horizontal to a substantially Vertical position and having rows of studs projecting from its rear side along the top and ends; anda reversible mattress designed to cover both sections d of the frame and having aap or skirt attached to its front edge and arranged to stretch across the front of the seat-section of the frame and over the edge of the same onto its under side said skirt having eyes to engage the studs on said section, the mattress also havinga flap or skirt extending along its backedge and partially along its sides or ends and arranged to stretch across the top and ends of the hinged section of the frame and over the edges thereof onto the rear side and having eyes to engage the studs on thishinged frame-section.
