LOUIS L. JUDGE, OF GOVANS, MARYLAND.
BEDSTEAD.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS L. JUDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Govans, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the incorporation in a bedstead, of a bed-bottom comprising two open-work supports for mattresses which are secured together face to face with a ventilation space between them, and adapted for rotation within the bedstead in such manner that either support with its mattress, can be placed uppermost; the object of the invention being to admit of the passage of air for sanitary purposes over both sides of the lower or unoccupied mattress, while the upper mattress is in use.
The said invention further relates to certain details of construction of the apparatus, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of such parts of a bedstead as are involved in the present invention, and Fig. 2 an enlarged top view of a part of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of Fig. l looking in the direction indicated by the arrow in that ligure. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the dotted line min Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a section taken on the dotted line g/-g/ in the same ligure.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the frame of the bedstead consists mainly of the head and foot rails which are denoted by 1, and the side rails by 2. The means whereby the rails are connected together to form the frame has no bearing upon the present invention and therefore needs no description herein.
The ends of the bed-bottom which are constructed of channel bars 4, are connected by the tubular side bars 5 in the ends of which are fastened the bolts t which pass through the channel bars, and are held thereto by nuts b.
7, 7 are woven wire fabrics which serve as supports for mattresses. They are connected at their ends to the channel bars by means of spiral springs 9, and placed face to face with a ventilation space between them.
The channel bars 4 are transversely bored,

centrally of their length, to receive the pivotal bar 10 the ends of which are supported by the head and the foot rails 1 in a manner hereinafter described; and it is immaterial' whether the said bar 10 is fastened to the channel bars 4 of the bed-bottom through which it extends, or is loose therein.
In order to properly support the ends of the pivotal bar 10 by the head and foot rails, and at the same time admit of` the bottom being held in a horizontal position, and yet allow of its being turned t0 change the relative positions of the mattresses 12, the channel bars are bored to a size considerably greater than that of the pivotal bar 10, and in the bored holes are loosely inserted the lrnobbed plugs 13. These plugs serve as bearings for the ends of the pivotal bar 10, and are provided with the arms 15 which have at their ends the bolts 17. The bolts 17 pass loosely through holes in the head and foot rails of the bedstead, and enter similar holes in the channel bars of the bedbottom. It will be seen that by this means the bottom is firmly held in a horizontal position, but can be released by drawing out the bolts 17 by means of the knobbed plugs, until the stop pins c strike the inner surface of the head and foot rails. The bed-bottom is then free to be turned carrying with it the mattresses.
To accurately centralize the bed-bottom between the head and foot rails of the bedstead, immediately before it reaches the horizontal position, the said rails are provided with the curved guides 20.
It will of course be necessary to temporarily secure the two mattresses to the bedbottom, and a simple means for effecting this result would be to employ straps 21 as shown in Fig. l.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with the head and foot rails of the frame of a bedstead, a bar'eX- tending longitudinally of the bedstead with its ends sustained by the said rails, a rotary bed-bottom supported by the bar, which consists of two open-work supports for mattresses which are held face to face with a ventilation space between them, and means whereby the bed-bottom can be held in a horizontal position or released to admit of its rotation, and other means to centralize the bed bottom longitudinally of the frame.
2. In combination with the frame of a bedstead, a pivoted bed-bottom therein the said bottom consisting of tivo openwvork supports for mattresses, which supports are,
secured together face to face With a ventilation space between them, means whereby the bed-bottoni can be held in a laterally horizontal position, or released to admit ofits rotation, and other means to eentralize the bed-bottom longitudinally of the frame as the bottom approaches the horizontal position.
8. In combination with the frame of a bedstead, a Central pivotal bar extending longitudinally of the frame, hollouv movable plugs in the head and foot rails of the frame which serve as bearings for the said bar, a bed-bottom hung on the pivotal bar adapted for rotation thereon, and devices operated by means of the plugs to lock the bed-bot` 1 tom While the same is in a horizontal position,
4. In Combination With the frame of a bedstead, a central pivotal bar extending longitudinally of the frame, hollow movable plugs in the head and foot rails of the frame which serve as bearings for the said bar, a bed-bottom hung on the pivotal bar adapted for rotation thereon, arms projecting from the plugs with bolts at their ends adapted to pass loosely through the head and foot rails of the frame, and enter holes in the channel bars of the bed-bottom to secure the same in a laterally horizontal position.
