Description

PATENTBD APR. 2', 1907.
R. W. GOEB. GLAMBING TYPE IN TYPE GALLEYS.
APPLIOATIOH FILED `JA.N. 4, 1907.
ww w 5 e m W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH W. GOEB, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE LEWIS PUB- LISHING COMPANY, OF UNIVERSITY CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF SOUTH DAKOTA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Yimatentecl April 2, 1907.
Application iiled Jallllaly 4, 1907. Serial No. 350,783.
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH WV. GOEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Clamping Type in Type-Galleys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a type-galley showing my improved clamping device therein and with the ends of its clamping member disengaged from the sides of the galley. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l showing the ends of the clamping member in operative engagement with the sides of the galley, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved device.
This invention relates to devices for loclring or clamping type in type-galleys.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple construction that will securely clamp the type in position and which cannot be accidentally displaced.
Briefly stated, my invention consists of a device that is stamped out of sheet metal and adapted to be arranged inside of a galley and provided with a yielding clamping member the ends of which contact with the inside faces of the sides of the galley for holding said device in position.
Referring to the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, l designates the base of my improved device, which is preferably stamped out of sheet metal. The base l carries a clamping inember consisting of a piece 2, disposed at approximately right angles to the base l and formed integral therewith, the ends of said piece being doubled back and then projecting rearwardly to form finger-pieces 3.
Then the device is in operative position in a galley A, as shown in Fig. 2, the ends 4 of the clamping member will engage the inside faces of the sides 5 of the galley, and thus hold the clamping member in intimate engagement with the top row of type 6 in the galleys, thereby clamping all of the rows of type together. Vhen it is desired to remove some of the type or place additional type in the galley, the nger-pieces 3 are pressed together, as shown in Fig. 1,.so as to force the ends of the clamping member rearwardly, and thus move them out of engagement with the inside faces of the sides of the galley, the
clamping member being formed of material which is sufficiently resilient to spring back into its normal position when the lingerpieces 3 are relieved from pressure. After the ends 4 of the clamping member have been disengaged from the sides of the galley the device can be moved upwardly toward the upper end of the galley `or removed from the galley. As the ends of the clamping member can only yield rearwardly or toward the upper end of the galley, the device can be moved from the upper end of the galley toward the lower end thereof without pressing the finger-pieces 3 together. It will be impossible, however, to move the deyice in the opposite direction-namely, toward the upper end of the galley-without first pressing the iinger-pieces 3 together.
A device. of this construction can be manufactured at a very small cost, due to the fact that it is stamped out of a single piece of metal, and it also possesses another very desirable feature-namely, surfaces 4L of great length for engagement with the inside faces of the sides of the galley, so that when the device is in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be impossible to accidentally displace it even if the galley is turned end for end, so that the entire weight of the type is borne by the clamping member 2. In fact, the greater pressure this clamping member is subjected to the more firmly will its ends engage the inside faces of the sides of the galle yHaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a yielding clamping member carried by said base, the ends of said clamping member being adapted to engage the inside faces of the sides of the galley, and linger-pieces on said clamping member adapted to be pressed together for moving the ends of said clamping member out of engagement with the sides of the galley; substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, adapted to be placed in a type-galley to IOO clamp the type therein, and comprising a v clamping member formed of yielding matel 4c. A device of the character described,
rial and having the end ortions thereof doubled and bent rearWar ly to provide fingerpieces; substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described, adapted to be placed in a type-galley to clamp the type Jtherein, and comprising a base-piece and a clamping member formed Jfrom a single piece of sheet metal, the interro mediate portion of said clamping member sides of the galley to hold the device in posi- :5 tion; substantially as described.
constructed from a single piece of sheet metal, and comprising a base, a clamping member consisting of a piece disposed at approximately right angles to the base and having the end portions thereof doubled and bent rearwardly to form finger-pieces 8; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of tWo Witnesses, this 31st day of December, 1906.
RUDOLPH W. GOEB.
