Referring to the drawings, which illustrate, merely by way of example, suitable means for the embodiment of our invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing two initials secured in the frame of the buckle.

Fig. 2 is an elevation showing three initials properly spaced and secured therein. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a word plate secured in the frame of the buckle. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing an emblem secured in said frame. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation on an enlarged scale with one letter shown secured in place. Fig. 6 is a-horizontal section on line 66 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a vertical section on line 77 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the outer frame of the buckle. Referring to Fig. 5, the under side of the upper horizontal flange 12 of the frame 11 is provided with a series of serrations 13 pressed into the surface of the metal. The lower horizontal flange 14 has a smooth surface. The

30, 31, 32 and 33. The various letters, symbols or words are provided with the upper extension 34: having an upper serrated margin 35, corresponding to the serrations 13 of the upper flange 12 of the outer frame 11, and with the lower extension 36 having a plane lower margin as shown in Fig. 10.

The manner of assembling is as follows The symbol or letter is placed in the desired position in the frame 11 with the lower margin of extension 36 pressing against. the lower flange l4 and against the inner face of the frame. The upper extension is then also moved toward the inner face of the frame, the serrated margin 35 engaging with the serrations 13. The locking frame 19 is then placed in the channel formed between the

12 and 14, with one end projecting slightly out of the end of the outer frame containing the pin 18. The inner frame is then pushed so as to cause the same to slide into position until the

30 and 31, or 32 and 33, as the case may be, engage beneath the

lugs

15 and 16. This forces the frame 19 firmly against the letters and forces the letters in close contact with the inner surface of the frame 11. The

22 or 23 as the case may be, is pressed beneath the lug 17 and the

24 or 25 as the case may be, engages and locks with the head 39 of pin 18. The parts in such assembled condition are shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. An arrow as shown in Fig. 8

may be advantageously marked on the inner side of frame 11 to indicate the direction in which the frame 19 is to be pushed in assembling one frame within the other. The inclined surfaces or lugs 30, 31, 32 and 33 are provided at each end of the

flanges

20 and 21 to facilitate convenience in assembling, that is, to make the locking frame 19 reversible. For this reason also the

recesses

24 and 25 and 28 and 29 are provided at each end. The purpose of the

recesses

28 and 29 is to receive a tool which may rest against the inner side of plate 11 and against the edge or margin of the

cross-piece

22 or 23 of plate 19. The lower member 36 of the letter or emblem is preferably made of sufficient width to provide a lower margin of sufficient extension to maintain the letter or emblem substantially at right angles with the flange 14 so that when the emblem or letter is placed in the proper position in the frame and then moved in with its serrated margin 35 into engagement with the serrations 13 the letter or emblem will be substantially upright or square with the surrounding frame.

By the use of the term emblem in the following claims, we mean to include any display device adapted to be removably engaged in the frame of the buckle; instances of which are given in the drawings.

Two distinct advantages are secured by having the margin of one extension only of the emblem serrated. It prevents the possibility of placing the emblem upside down.

It obviates the necessity of placing the emblem primarily in precisely the upright position; since, after assembling the two frames, but before sliding the inner frame into final position, the buckle maybe turned over and the smooth end of the emblem may be shifted from left to right as desired, after which the frames are brought into final cooperative position to clamp the emblem therewith.

lVhat we claim is 1. A frame having parallel flanges, the inner surfaceof one flange being serrated, a letter or emblem provided with extensions adapted to fit between the flanges, one extension having a serrated margin for engaging with the serrated flange and another extension having a smooth margin for engaging the other flange and means for looking the same against the inner face of the frame.

2. A buckle comprising a frame having oppositely disposed parallel flanges, an emblem adapted to fit between said flanges, said frame and emblem provided with 00-- operating recesses and projections and a sec- 0nd frame having sliding engagement with the first frame for securing the emblem therebetween, one of said frames having an inclined portion engaging with the other frame to produce a binding engagement therebetween.

The combination of a frame having upper and lower parallel flanges, an emblem adapted to {it between said flanges, the frame and emblem provided with cooperating recess and projection engagement and locking means for maintaining said en gagement comprising a sliding member fitting within the flanges of the frame and means for securing a wedging engagement between said member and frame.

4;. The combination of a frame having parallel flanges and lugs projecting from said flanges, an emblem adapted to fit between the flanges and a locking member for securing the emblem in position having wedge shaped extensions for engaging beneath the lugs.

5. The combination of a frame having paraliel flanges and lugs projecting from said flanges at one end thereof, a lug projecting over the inner side of a portion of the frame at the opposite end thereof and provided with a detent, an emblem adapted to fit between the flanges, a locking member for securing the emblem in position adapted to slide between the flanges of the frame having inclined surfaces for engaging beneath the lugs at one end of the frame, and a recessed part for engaging beneath the detent at the other end.

6. The combination of a frame having parallel flanges, lugs extending from the flanges at one end, a lug extending over a portion of the inner side of the frame at the other end thereof, an emblem adapted to be secured between the flanges against the inner face of the frame and a locking member for engaging the emblem provided with a pair of inclined extensions at each end, either pair adapted to engage the lugs.

7. The combination of a frame having parallel flanges, lugs extending from the flanges at one end, a lug extending over a portion of the inner side of the frame-at the other end thereof, an emblem adapted to be secured between the flanges against the inner face of the frame and a locking member for engaging the emblem provided with a pair of inclined extensions at each end, either pair adapted to engage the lugs, said locking member provided with a recess for receiving a tool for disengaging the same from its locking position.

8. The combination of a frame having parallel flanges, lugs extending from the flanges at one end, a lug extending over a portion of the inner side of the frame at the other end thereof, an emblem adapted to be secured between the flanges against the inner face of the frame and a locking member for engaging the emblem provided with a pair of inclined extensions at each end, either ofsaid pairs adapted to engage the lugs, and

means for securing locking engagement between the locking frame and the lug at the other end of the frame.

9. A buckle comprising two frame elements having sliding engagement with each other, one of said frames having an inclined portion engaging with the other frame to produce a binding engagement therebetween, an emblem adapted to be associated with said elements, said emblem and one of said frame elements provided with cooperating recesses and projections for securing the relative position of the emblem with said element, said frame elements cooperating in maintaining the emblem in position with respect thereto.

10. A buckle comprising two frame elements having sliding engagement with each other, one of said frames having an inclined portion engaging With the other frame to produce a binding engagement therebetween, an emblem adapted to be associatedwith said elements, said emblem and one of said frame elements provided with cooperating recesses and projections for securing the relative position of'the emblem with said element, and a detent for normally maintaining the cooperative relationship of said frame elements.
