Be it known that I, HENRY J. REUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View of the device shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the construction of one of ihe leaf-holding spindles and clamping memers. This invention relates to devices for temporarily binding together a number of sheets or leaves.

The main object of my invention is to provide a device of the character referred to that will be compact, of simple construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and in which the clamping members will not be liable to come unfastened accidentally, and thus release the sheets or leaves.

Referring to the drawings which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates two leaf-holding spindles which project upwardly from a base-plate 2, that is fastened to a cover-board 3. Cooperating with each spindle 1 is a clamping member which is substantially Ushaped and preferably formed from a fiat strip of spring metal, the lower leg 4 of said member being connected to the base-plate by the spindle, which extends through said'plate, and the upper leg 5 of said member being provided with an opening 6 of greater diameter than the end of the spindle 1, so that said upper leg can be pressed down over the end of said spindle and underneath a notch 7 therein to securely clamp the sheets together, as shown in Fig. 2.

To prevent the clamping member from being accidentally unlocked, as would be liable to happen if the curved portion of said member was knocked or subjected to pressure, I have provided the upper leg 5 with an upwardly-projecting lip 8, which extends into an opening or recess 9, formed in the head 1 of the spindle, so that the only way in which the clamping member can be released is by pressing downwardly on said upper leg, as

I shown in Fig. 3. The upper leg can then be bent backwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to permit the sheets to be removed from the spindles.

I have herein shown the preferred embodiment of my invention as being in the form of a book comprising two cover-boards 3, that are connected together by a flexible back 3 but it will of course be understood that the base-plate and the spindles and clamping members connected thereto could be fastened to a single back piece, and thus produce a device similar to a pad.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the clamping means of my device are very compact and occupy but little space, and as the binder consists of only a few sim ple parts it can be manufactured at a small cost.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A temporary binder comprising a baseplate having leaf-holding spindles projecting upwardly therefrom, clamping members cooperating with each spindle and consisting of flat pieces of spring metal that are connected to the base-plate and extend over said spindles, said clamping members being provided with openings through which the spindles project, and shoulders on said spindles under which said clamping members extend; substantially as describe d.

2. A temporary binder comprising a baseplate carrying upwardly-proj ecting leaf-holding spindles that are provided at their upper ends with shoulders, and U-shaped springmetal clamping members connected to said base-plate and provide d with openings through which said spindles project, the edges of said openings extending underneath the shoulders on the spindles; substantially as described.

3. A temporary binder comprising a baseplate carrying upwardly-projecting leaf-holding spindles provided at their upper ends with notches, a spring-metal U-shaped clamping member cooperating with each spindle and having its lower leg connected to the base-plate, the upper leg of said member being provided with an opening through which the spindle projects, and an upwardly-extending lip on said upper leg which projects into a recess formed in the spindle when the clamping member is in operative position, substantially as described.
