The Schedule referred to' these Letters Patent and making part of the `same.
commonly used for washing-purposes, provided in partwith our improvement. y
Figure 2 is a plan view of our grated false bottom. Figure 3, a view of our sleeved connecting and distributing-pipe.
Like letters indicate like parts in each ligure.
This invention is designed to reduce the `labor required by ordinary processes of washingv clothes, and consists in so constructing a boiler and its attachments that, when properly iilled, and acted upon by fire or4 heat, avacuum will be created below the false bottom, by a displacement of the water, which is forced to ascend in the chambers at the ends of the boiler, and thence passing into suitable distributing-tubes, isl discharged, i`n a constant and steady shower, upon the clothes, and, forcing its way down through the same, abstracts the dirt in its passage; or, in other words, the apparatus is designed to keep a constant current of water passing through the clothing being operated upon.
We construct a boiler, A, provided with chambers Y' B, at each end of and outside the wall of the boiler.I
These chambers may be semicircular in form, or any other desired shape, and should be larger at the bottom than at the top. A slot should be cut through the walls of the boiler, at either end, affording au outlet from the boiler into the chambers, near their bottoms, which rest upon and are attached to ears C, which form a continuation of a pit-bottom of the boiler. The upper ends of these chambers terminate in tubes D, project-'-A ing inward through the end walls of the boiler, and,
when in operation, are connected by two .perforated tubes E, one of which isA slipped inside the other telescopically. Across the pit inthe bottom of the boiler are rigidly fastened braces F,.whioh also. act as a foundation, upon which rests the/,'.grated false bottom J, which is held in place by button G, which engages with catches or legs H, soldered or riveted to the side. walls of ,the boiler. I is `a suitable faucet inserted through the wall ofthe boiler, below the false bottom,
for the purpose of enabling the operatorto draw on" filthy water at pleasure.
W'hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'The perforated sliding extension tube E, in combination with the chambers B, the gratedfa-lse bottom J, provided with button G, andthe lugs H, on the boiler A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Also, the ears C, in connection with the chambers B, and the pit-bottom of the boiler A, substantially as described.
And the combination of all the above-named partswith the faucet I, when arranged and operating sub'd stantially as -andfor the purposes herein specified. PIUS L. SHEPLER. SAMUEL L. IRWIN. Witnesses:
H. T. EBERTs, Lewis L. GORDON.
