Chandelier.

N. PETERS. Photn-Lkhuluphlr, Wuhiuln. D. C.
UNITED STATES PETER LOTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED CHANDELIEP.
Speciiieation forming part of Leiters Patent No. 47,312, dated April 1S, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER LOTE, of Nos. 374 and 37 6 Canal street, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Chandelier 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of this invention, the line y y, Fig. 3, indicating plane of section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line x Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section taken in the plane z z, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of .reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a sliding joint with the central rod or tube of a chandelier in such a manner that the chandelier can be used in the ordinary manner, and at the same time a drop-light is obtained, which can be used in connection with or independent of said chandelier. The gas is con` ducted to the various arms of the chandelier by a combination of two chambers, which are connected to each other by a series of pipes arranged around the central tube of the chandelier, and the upper one ot' which is furnished with a central tubular stem, which extends downward and forms the guide for the central sliding tube, and in combination with this tube and with a small pipe rising from the gas-chamber of the drop-light it forms aliquid joint to prevent the waste of gas, whatever may be the position of the drop-light.
A represents a chandelier which connects 'with the gas-supply pipe by means ot' a nipple, a. It is provided with two chambers, b o, which are connected to each other by a series ot' pipes, e, arranged round the central tube, d. The number of the pipes e may or may not be made to correspond to the number of arms f ot' the chandelier, according to taste and convenienee, and the number of arms may be large or small, according to the number of flames required.
The upper chamber, b, is furnished with a central tubular stem, d', which extends in a downward direction into the central tube, d,
of the chandelier, and this latter tube passes freely through the center of the lower chamber, c, which is made annular to admit said tube without loss of gas. The central tube, d, rises from a gas-chamber, g, which connects by three (more or less) tubular arms, h, with the burner t, and said chamber is supplied with gas through a small pipe, j, which passes up through the central tube, d, and into the tubular stem d of the upper gas-chamber, l1, as clearly as shown in Fig. 1. The space bctween the outside of the pipe j and the inner circumference of the central tube, d, is filled with water or other suitable liquid which rises up and produces a gas tightjoint around the tubular stem d' and pipe j, so that the burner 'i can be raised or lowered without interrupting its communication with the gas-supply pipe or causing a waste of gas.
The burner t', with all of its attachments, is balanced by three (more or less) weights, k, suspended from chains l, which run over pulleys m, secured to the upper part of the chandelier, and thence down to arms n, projecting from the gas-chamber g. By means of these weights the burner 'i is sustained at any height, andthe position ot' the ame can thus be regulated with the greatest convenience; and, furthermore, the chandelier can be used entirely independent of or in connection with the drop-light or burner t', or this burner may be used independent of the remaining parts ot' the chandelier, and a convenient fixture is obtained which combines the advantages of an ordinary chandelier and drop-light, and which produces a novel and striking effect.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A chandelier and central adjustable droplight combined, as a new article of manufacture.
2. The chamber b c g, in combinationwith tubes and pipes d d e j, arms f and h, and balaneel-weights k, or their equivalents, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
