UNITED STATES STEPHEN S. MILLEDGE, OF CARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR HEATING VEHICLE-TIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,022, dated November 20,1888. 7 Application filed March 21, 1888. Serial No. 267.940. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN S. IVIILLEDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarrollton, inthe State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Heating Vehicle-Tires, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to devices for heating wagon-tires; and it consists in certain peculiarities of theconstruction and arrangement .of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my device; and Figs. 3 and 4 are details of parts of the same.
a represents the main frame, of suitable size and material, mounted upon legs to lift it to a proper and convenient height, and provided with supports of any suitable kind for supporting the tires thereon while they are being operated upon. This device is at one side provided with a supply-tube, a, connecting at its upper end with a reservoir, (d, for gasoline, oil, or other suitable fluid to be burned. The lower end of this supply-tube is provided with a stop-cock, o to regulate the flow to the burners, and is extended through or under the main frame to its center, where it is provided with a series of radial arms, a, which will be of any desirable number and size; but four are herein represented, and are found usually to be sufficient for the purposes in view.
Each of the radial arms a is at its end provided with a double socket-joint, b, to which are hinged a pair of arms, I), each of which carries upon its outer end a curved jet-tube, I), provided with a series of jets or burners, b suitable for burning the fluid or liquid used for fuel, and which are preferably constructed with forked ends, as at 0*, to produce a forked flame, as will be hereinafter described. The radial arms a are also each provided with a dropped extension, a, each of which is provided with a double socket, c, hinged arms 0,
burner-tubes c and jets c exactly as just described, except that the burnertubes b are of smaller curve or diameter and have their jets or burners upon their outer sides, while the tubes 0 are bent upon a larger curve and have their jets upon the inside.
The tire to be heated is laid upon the main frame and the jet-tubes adjusted around it near its inner and outer sides. The jets being then lighted are thrown against the tire, which is rapidly and evenly heated as may be required, and by the use of the forked jets it will be understood at once that two tires may be heated at one time,- as in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The jointed arms are readily adjusted to suit tires of variousdiameters, and the device saves considerably in time and fuel as well as insuring the even heating and expanding of the metal.
I do not desire to confine myself to the exact construction herein shown and described,
but will vary this as experience or special circumstances may dictate without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a device for heating tires, the combination of an inner and an outer circular burner-tube, one provided with jets or burners on its outer and the other on its inner side, whereby the tire is heated from both sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for heating tires, a circular jet or burner tube formed in sections and each section supported upon adjustable hinged arms, whereby the size of the jet-circle is conformed to the size of the tire to be heated, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device for heating-tires, the combination,witl1 the reservoir, its supply-tube, and the radial pipes leading therefrom, each pro vided with two double socket-joints at its outer end, of the inner and outer sectional jet or burner tubes, and the hinged arms connecting these sections with the radial arms, substantiall y as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN S. MILLEDGE.
