DEVICE FOR SECURING OVERSHOES TO SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed March 17,1906. Serial No. 306,593.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BURLIE SYLVESTER HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hattiesburg, in the county of Perry and State of Mississip i, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in De vices for Securing Overshoes to Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for holding overshoes upon an ordinary shoe, and comprises a simple and efficient means whereby the device may be applied to shoes having up ers of various heights, and comprises detai s of construction which will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aview in side elevation, showing the ap lication of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertica sectional view through the portion of a shoe, showing parts of my invention in elevation; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the upper of a shoe, and B a hook-shaped member which is adapted to hook over and rest upon the upper edge of said upper. Said member has a plate 0, hinged upon a pin D, carried by said member, and said plate has corrugations D and D inwhich corrugations are positioned pins E and E, respectively. The lower end of said plate has a convexed portion F and a tongue F G designates a strap which is either fixed to or integral with an overshoe and is provided with a series of perforations G for the reception of said tongue F, whereby the strap maybe adjusted. Said strap passes over the convexed portion F behind the pin E, thence about the pin E and back behind the pin E, and its end terminates at E To the lower portion of the member B outside the upper is mounted a pin H, u on which is pivoted a lever K, having a 0 am ing projection K, adapted to force the p ate 0 against the folds of the strap G, whereby the latter may be held frictionally against the outer surface of the up- From the foregoing it will be noted that by the provision of the means shown and described a simple and efficient holder is afforded whereby an overshoe may be securely held upon an ordinary shoe and so arranged. that it may be adjusted to fit different-sized shoes, and by the mechanical construction illustrated it will be noted that the device may be easily and quickly applied either to ordinary overshoes or shoes having integral straps adapted for connection to mechanism for holding the overshoe upon an upper.
What I claim is A device for holding overshoes upon shoes, comprising a hook-shaped member adapted to fit over an upper, a plate pivoted thereto and provided with corrugations, a pin mounted in each of said corrugations, a buckle at the lower end of said plate, adapted to receive a strap extending from the overshoe over said buckle and about the pins in said corrugations, and a clamping-lever pivoted to said member and ada ted to bear against said plate to cause the latter to clamp said strap against the upper, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BURLIE SYLVESTER HOWELL.
