SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,404, dated June 6, 1899.
pplication filed February 16, 1899, Serial No. 705,688. (No model.)
T all whom, it may cm1/cern.-
Beit known that I, EDWARD BALLY, a citizen of theRepublic of Switzerland, and a resident of Schoenenwerd, Switzerland, have invented a new and useful Buckle, (for which I applied for a patent in Switzerland on the 9th of December, 1898; in Great Britain on the 11th of January, 1899, and in France on the 12th of January, 1399,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toa buckle, which consists of an upper and a lower part, the upper part having a tongue by means of which it can engage between a bridge-piece and a spring of the lower part for the purpose of connection. The end of the spring takes into a groove in the tongue and presses the latter against the bridgepiece. By this means an easy disengagement of the upper part from the lower part is prevented and the buckle connection is rendered secure.
The drawings illustrate, by way of eXainple, one form of construction of the buckle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan. Fig. 2 is a section on the line x x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the lower part. Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 2, showing the upper part raised; and Fig. 5 is a general view of a shoe provided with this buckle.
The buckle consists of an upper part a and of a lower part Z9. The upper part is curved and is provided with a tongue c, in which is a groove d. For the purpose of connecting the upper part with a buckle-strap o cross-slots 3 5 f are provided, through which the strap can be passed. The lower part h is fastened to the end e of the strap. Between lateral punched-up parts g of the lower part there is inserted a bridge-piece 7i. A spring z' projects with one end upward toward the bridge-piece. The other end of the spring is attached to the base-plate of the lower part. On passing the upper part with the tongue c under the bridgepiece 7i of the lower part the spring t' is first slightly depressed until it can snap into the groove d., The upper part is then pressed by the spring with its end that is opposite to the tongue against the end of the lower part and there keeps or jams the strap e, which is passed through the cross-slots.
In order to disconnect the two parts of the buckle from each other, the upper part must be raised, Fig. 4. In this operation the spring slips oit the tongue c arid the upper part can be drawn from under the bridge-piece h.
Fig. 5, which showsa shoe, illustrates the lnode of using this buckle. The lower part is fastened on one side of the shoe either directly to the upper of the shoe or to a short piece of strap. The buckle-strap proper, e, engages therewith from the opposite side on the front, where it is passed through the upper part a of the buckle, as above described, and can be kept stretched by connecting the two parts together.
lVhat I claim is- 1. A fastening for shoes and the like coinprising a base or lower part b having a bridgepiece, a spring carried by said base, and an upper piece connected with the strap and having a backwardlyextending tongue adapted to pass beneath the bridge-piece, said tongue having a groove to engage the spring, substantially as described.
2. A fastening for shoes and the like coniprising a lower or base portion having a bridgepiece, a spring carried by said base portion projecting beneath the bridge-piece, an upper piece having a plurality of slots to receive a strap, said piece having a tongue adapted to project beneath the bridge and engage said spring, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD BALLY. lVitnesses:
R. HocHsHAFER, HENRY H. MORGAN.
