To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. SCURR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oreston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Fastener, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to certain improvements in means whereby the end of a strap, line, or other like object is detachably secured to some other object.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastener for the end of a line, strap, or other like object which shall be simple and cheap in point of construction, which shall be positive and secure in attachment, and which shall permit of convenient and ready detachment.
My object, further, is to provide means whereby the strain of the pull is distributed in the most desirable manner.
My invention has certain other objects in view; and it consists in certain features about to be described, and pointed out in my claims, reference being now had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the fastener securing the strap to an object. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the strap in the position assumed when being detached. Fig. 3 is a side View of the fastener, showingit securing the strap to an object. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form. Figs. 5 and 6 are like views showing two positions assumed by the strap as the same is being adjusted to the fastener for securing the strap to an object. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the fastener, showing the strapsecured to an object and adjusted in the fastener. Fig. 8 is a side view of the same.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, my inven tion consists in a fastener which is secured rigidly to the strap or other like object and held permanently thereon, which fastener is composed of a bottom guide-plate A and an upper or top guide-plate B, held together in parallelism by means of the web D, the bottom guide-plate A, the top guide-plate B, and the web D all being made in one piece. As these parts are constructed, a guiding member E is provided having an open longitudinal side G, which member is mounted upon and secured to the strap H by meansof rivets or otherwise through the bottom guide-plate A. The guiding member E is secured to the strap at or near one end thereof, and also secured to said strap in proximity to the guiding member E is a holding-clip J, which is adapted to be brought into engagement with or separated from the guiding member E by a longitudinal pull of the strap. This clip J is provided with an upturned engaging lip J which when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 fits into a recess cut out of the edge of the member E. The clip is of the construction shown in Fig. 2, having a flange on each side.
Referring to Fig. 2, the preliminary adj ustment of the strap for fastening to the ring K will be observed. One end of the strap having been inserted through the ring it is then inserted sidewise in the longitudinal opening G, and as a pull is exerted longitudinally upon the strap it is brought lengthwise into and between the top and bottom guidingplates A and B. In the continued further pull upon the strap the holding-clip J is brought into engagement with the guiding member E, as shown in Fig. 1, the strap sliding lengthwise through the guiding-plates A and B. When the holding-clip J is positioned and the strap pulled taut about the ring, the upturned lip J of the engaging clip J engages the recess in the guiding member E and withholds the strap from lateral displacement.
Projected forwardly from and formed integrally with the bottom guide-plate D is a strain-receivin g extension Hiwhich is slightly bent downward, and about the outer end edge of which the strap is turned.
By reference to Fig. 3 more particularly it will be observed that the strain of the pull of the strap is imposed upon the said end edge of the extension H and also upon the object to which the strap is secured, in this instance the ring K. It is further evident that the function of this strainreceiving extension H is to relieve the guiding-plates A and B from any stress which would tend to distort these parts.
In order to release the strap from its fastened position, it is only necessary to push the strap forwardly, so that the lip J 2 is disengaged from the edge of the member E, and then by a lateral movement p the strap out through the longitudinal opening G.
Referring now to the modified form shown in Figs. 4: to S, inclusive, I provide a bottom guide-plate A which is secured to the strap II by means of rivets or in any other suitable manner. Formed integrally with the bottom guide-plate are the engaging lips B and IF, which extend over in parallelism with the bottom plate and from each side of said plate, being held in this position by means of the webs D and l). I thus provide the openings G and G between said lips and the bottom guide -plate, which openings are on either side of said plate. In this form also I provide the forwardly and downwardly extended strain-receiving member II as in the form previously described.
In order to secure the strap by the fastener, the end thereof is passed through the ring L and a portion of its length inserted in the opening G between the two lips 15 and B, which opening extends diagonally across the bottom guide-plate A this opening l being formed diagonal by means of the formation of the inner edges of the said lips ll" and 13". lVhen the strap has thus been positioned, as shown in Fig. 5, by exerting a pull thereon the strap is brought into the position as shown in Fig. (i, and by a further continued pull it is then brought into the position shown in Figs. 7 and 8, thus securely holding the strap to the object and within the fastener. In this form of my device it is evident that the strain is imposed about the end edge of the strain receiving member I1 and the ring L, as in the term previously described.
In order to release the fastening, it is simply necessary to move the strap laterally, whereby it passes out from beneath the lips 3 and B into the diagonal opening G and then drawn out of this opening.

1. In combination with a strap, a base-plate secured to the end thereof, a parallel top plate supported from the base-plate at one side and providing a channel or recess to admit of the turned-back or looped portion ol. the strap being inserted laterally into said channel and then moved longitudinally to contact the loop and means for retaining the turned-back portion against lateral displacement in said channel until it has first been moved longitudinally to enlarge the loop, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a strap, a base-plate secured to the end thereof and having an an gular extension forming a strain member, a parallel top plate carried by'said base-plate at one side and forming a lateral channel or chamber to admit of the turned-back orlooped portion of the strap being inserted laterally therein and then moved longitudinally to contract the loop, and means for preventing the lateral displacement of the strap until it has 'lirst been moved longitudinallyto enlarge the loop, substantially as described.

In combination with a strap, a base-plat e secured to the end thereof, a parallel top plate carried by said base-plate at one side and p reviding a channel to admit of the turned-back or looped portion of the strap, being inserted laterally therein and then moved longitudinally to COlllJltCll the loop, and means carried by said strap for engaging one of the plates on such longitudinal movement whereby the strap is retained against lateral. movement in the channel while the loop'is contracted, substantially as described.
