CHRISTINA J. IIIGLEY, OF NEI/V YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 622,683, dated April 11, 1899. Application filed February 18, 1899. Serial No. 705,983. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTINA J. IIIGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates generally to buttons, and particularly to buttons of the type employed in button-and-loop garment-s11 pporter clasps and embodies improvements upon the button covered by the patent to Charles WV. Stimson, No. 603,517, dated May 3, 1898. Said button consists of washers of elastic material, such as felt, forming the neck and head of the button and united to a base-plate bya suitable fastening device, such as a headed rivet.
My invention consists in the novel means employed for preventing drooping of the headwashers and in the novel means employed for preventing undue and uneven compression of the neck-washers.
The objects of my invention are to improve the construction of buttons the heads and necks of which are composed of elastic material, such as felt, to prevent them from losing shape, to prevent undue and uneven compression of the necks of the buttons, which tends to make the necks of uneven diameters, and to make the buttons as simple and as inexpensive as possible. These objects are attained in the invention herein described, and illustrated in the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, in which the same reference-numerals indicate the same or corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved button, and Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof.
In the drawings, 1 is the base-plate of the button, 2 and 3 are washers of elastic material, such as felt, which form the neck and head, respectively, of the button, and 4 is a fastening device by which the washers 2 and 3 are secured to the base-plate. This fastenin g device is preferably a headed hollow rivet, the lower end of which passes through aper foration in the baseplate and is upset, so as to hold the rivet in place.
eyelet being inclined at such angle to the stem that the bur on the edge formed in the manufacture of the eyelet presses against the stem and so holds the eyelet firmly in place.
It is very difficult and practically impossible to press a flat disk over a stem or rivet, such as 4, so tightly that said disk will be held firmly in place. It is for this reason that I employ instead of a flat diska tapering eyelet, for the inclined lower edge of the eyelet may be pressed so firmly against and into the stem that the eyelet will not slip under the conditions of use.
The riveta' is provided with a reduced shoulder 6, adjacent to the upper surface of the base-plate, which determines the length of that portion of the rivet which projects above the base-plate, so that if the washers be all of the same size and thickness the degree of compression of the felt in all buttons of the same kind shall be substantially the same. This is important, because if in difierent buttons the neck-washers 2 are subjected to different degrees of compression the diameters of the necks of the buttons will vary. It is important that all buttons of the same size shall have necks of the same diameters, so that they may be adapted for use with the same size of loops.
Having thus completely described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a button, the combination, withabaseplate, and Washers of elastic material forming the neck and head of the button, of a fastem ing device securing said washers to the base plate, and provided with a separable flange, held thereon by friction, for supporting the head-washer, substantially as described.
2. In abutton, the combination, with a baseplate, and Washers of elastic material forming the neck and head of the button, of a fastening device securing said washers to the base plate, and provided with a separable flange, interposed between the head and neck washers, and held upon the fastening device by friction, and serving to support and compress the head-washer, substantially as described.
3. In a button, the combination, with abaseplate, and washers of elastic material formin g the neck and head of the button, of a rivet securing said washers to the base-plate and provided with a separable flange, held thereon ,by friction, for supporting the head-washer,
substantially as described.
4. In abutton, the combination, Witha baseplate, of 'a stem separate therefrom but secured thereto and provided with a head, and with a separable flange below said head and held in place upon the stem by friction, and a washer of elastic material interposed between said flange and head and projecting outward beyond the same, substantially as described.
5. In abutton, the combination, with a baseplate, and washers of elastic material forming outward beyond the same, substantially as described.
7. In a button, the combination, with abaseplate, and washers of elastic material forming the neck and head of the button, of a rivet securing said washers to the base-plate, and provided with a limiting-shoulder engaging the base-plate, upon the upper side thereof, substantially as described.
8. In abutton, the combination, with a baseplate, and washers of elastic material forming the neck and head of the button, of a rivet securing said washers to the base-plate, and provided with a limiting-shoulder engaging the base-plate, upon the upper side thereof, and also provided with a flange pressing against the head-washer, substantially as de= scribed.
9. In a button, the combination, With a base plate, of a stem separate therefrom but secured thereto and provided with a limitingshoulder engaging the base-plate, upon the upper side thereof, and with a head, and having also a separable flange below said head and held in. place upon the stem by friction, and a washer of elastic material interposed between said flange and head and projecting outward beyond the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
- CHRISTINA J. HIGLEY.
