HI'l'CHING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,135, dated December 8, 1903.

To all whom it mag/concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK OBIOLS, a citilently the animal may move about or agitate the hitching-strap.

' The invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.

In the drawings illustrativeof the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan'view of the device applied to a hitching-post. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate modified means for connecting the device to structures other than hitch- I ing-posts.

The device may be employed for many purposes, but, as before stated,-is more particularly applicable to hitching horses; but I do not wish to be limited in the use of the device to any specific purpose or in connection with any specific structure, but reserve the right to its use for whatever purpose it may be adapted.

The improved device consists of a base member 10, preferably circular or in disk form and having a cam lug-or surface 11 extending from its face at one side and with a lip 12 extending over the cam-lug and forming a socket, as shown.

It will be noted that the base member extends on all sides beyond the cam member 14 and that the cam-memberlikewiseextends beyond the lip 12 on the side toward which the strain is exerted and has its outer face' rounded at the corner 16 to cause the strap when moved upwardly or laterally to slip freely thereover and engage the straight edge 12 of the rigid lip 12to prevent such a movement from causing said strap to-obtain any purchase or exert any backward strain on the cam member, which strain would be liable to disengage the cam member and release the strap. Thus no. matter how violently the animal may toss his head about and throw the strap about no position in which it can be placed will exert a backward strain upon the cam member and release it, butsuch strain will be thrown on the rigid lip 12.

The plate 10 may be'fastened in any suitable manner to any required support,-such as a hitching-post 17, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to a mangeror other feeding-place, asindicated at 18 in Fig. 3, or to a wall 19, as in,- dicated in Fig. 4. A holding-bolt 20 may be formed integralwith the plate, as in Fig 1,

If desired, the relative locations of the

12 and 14 could be reversed, so that the memher 15 would be inserted from the opposite side; but it is obvious that this would not be a departure from the spirit of the invention.

The device may be employed to advantage upon a seat or other part of a wagon to hold the reins.

I. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A hitching device comprising a. base-plate having a cam-socket provided with an overhanging lip,-a cam pivotally mounted on said base-plate in position to engage the cam-wall of said socket, said cam projecting beyond my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
