SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,732, dated October 16, 1894.

Be it known that I, FRANK SHERRY, of J acksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Tug-Adjuster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a tug adjuster for harness, and it has for its object to provide an adjusting device adapted to constitute a portion of a harness, through the medium of which the tug straps of said harness may be expeditiously and convenientlyshortened or lengthened as occasion may demand.
The invention consists in the novelconstruotion and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is-to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the improved'tug adjuster. Fig. 2 is a perspective view .of the adjuster and the tug straps connected therewith. Fig. 3 is a transverse. section taken through the straps and illustrating the adjuster in side elevation; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the adjuster and a longitudinal section through the straps, the section being taken essentially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out this invention the adjuster A may be said to consist preferably of a base plate 10, which is provided at one end with an eye 11, adapted to receive one end of the erupper, and with an eye 12 in the opposite end, adapted for attachment to one end of the back strap of the harness. .Upon the base plate 10, a metal loop 13, is located, the said loop being preferably nearer the forward than the rear end of the base plate, and the loop is not only open at both sides but it is likewise provided with an opening 14 in the top thereof. This loop, as shown in Fig. 3, is preferably made a portion of or is attached to a horizontal shank 15, and the loop is held in position upon the base plate by attaching the rear end of the shank thereto, as shown best in Fig. 2. The shank is provided with alongitudinal slot 15, and the loop 13 is provided at its forward and rear ends with an opening, designated as 16,

while an opening 17, is made inthe bottom of the loop corresponding to the upper opening 14. The forward and rear or end openings 16 are in alignment with the slot in the shank of the loop.
A bolt 18, is held to slide upon the base plate, having guided movement between the walls of the slot 15 in the, shank of the loop and the walls of the lower opening 17 in the loop. The bolt is provided with a handle at one of its ends, whereby it may bereadily manipulated, and the bottom of the bolt is preferably fiat, but the upper surface is cylindrical whereby said bolt is substantially semi-circular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 4.
The back straps, which in this case also constitute the hip straps of the harness, are designated respectively as B and C. Each of these straps is provided with the ordinary buckle formed loop 19 at one of its ends to receive the tugs, and each of the straps at its opposite end is attached to a ring 20, and the tug-carrying end of each strap is passed through the ring of the opposing strap, whereby the two straps at the top will be one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 2; and the two straps in this position are passed through the side openings in the loop 13 of the tug adjuster, as shown in Fig. 4. When the bolt 18 is drawn from within the loop 13 of the adjuster, and is carried out of engagement with the straps, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, by grasping the rings 20 and manipulating the same upward or downward the tug straps. may be lengthened or shortened as occasion may demand; and when the straps have received proper adjustment the bolt is forced into the loop section of the adjuster, as shown in positive lines in Figs: 3 and 4 and likewise in Fig. 2, and the cylindrical surface of the bolt will force the straps to kink in an upwardly direction, and bring the upper one in frictional engagement with the walls of the upper slot 14 in the loop of the adjuster, and thelower strap to close frictional engagementwith the upper one, as is best illustrated in Fig. 4, and in this position the boltwill maintain the straps in position and prevent their slipping.
This device is exceedingly simple, it is durable and economic, and it is capable of application to any harness. It is also evident that the tug straps, through its medium may be readily shortened or lengthened, and will be held in any position in which they may have been placed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A tug adjuster, the same consisting of a base, a loop located upon the base and having end, top and side openings, a horizontal shank extending from one end of the loop,a longitudinal slot formed in the shank and a bolt held to slide upon the base and in the said slot, said bolt being adapted to enter the loop through oneof its end openings and force any straps that maybe passed through said loop to anengagement with the upper portion of the loop, substantially as shown and described. t

A tug adjuster, the same consisting of a baseplate having eyes atits ends for attachment to aharness,aloop located upon the baseplate near one end thereof'and having side openings to receive the tug straps, end openings and an opening in its top, a shank extending from one end of the loop and secured to the base plate, the said shank having alongitudinal slot formed therein, a bolt'pr'o- I vided with a handle at one end and held to slide in the said longitudinal slot and having guided movement in the loop through the end openings thereof, the upper surface of the bolt being cylindrical and adapted to engage with the under surface of a strap located in the loop and clamp the said strap in the loop, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a tug strap adjuster, the same consisting of a base adapted forattachment to a harness, a loop located upon the base, having end and top openings in addition to side openings, and a bolt having guided movement upon the base and adapted to enter the loop through the end openings thereof, of tug straps passed one upon the other through the side openings in the loop, the bolt of the adjuster being adapted for engagement with the under face of the straps, imparting to the straps an upward inclination, each strap being made to terminate at one end in a one strap being ring, the tug-holding end of passed through the ring of the opposing strap, substantially as shown and described.
