, F. HARDY.
FASTENBR FOR HARNESS.
Patented Nov. 20, 1888.
UNITED STATES FFICE.
PATENT FASTENER FOR-HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,153, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed August 8, 1888. Serial No. 282,232. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Harness; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fastenings for harness, and most especially for halters, and has for its object the provision of a fastening, which when applied to a halter admits of the halter being readily applied and removed without having to slip it on or off the animals nose, and which, when applied to straps or the ends of reins, permits the coupling and uncoupling of the straps in less time than it takes to pass the strap through the loop of an ordinary buckle.
The improvement consists in the novel features, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a plan view of the fastening, parts being broken away; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the fastening applied to a halter; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the fastening on the line X X of Fig. 1; Fig. 4., a plan view of a modification of fastening; and Fig. 5, a plan view of a modified form of fastening, showing it adapted for a buckle or ordinary fastening for straps.
The fastener, composed of the parts B and B, has the part B provided with a curved tongue, I), at one end and a hook, I), at its other end, and the part B, with a recess, 6, and a cross-bar, e, at one end, and with a pivoted catch, d, at its other end. The curved tongue 12 is adapted to enter the recess e and embrace the cross-bar e and hold the parts B and B together at one end, and the hook I) is adapted to be engaged by the catch d and hold the said parts B and B together at their other ends. The parts B and B are provided with a tongue and groove, f and f, respectively, which hold them against lateral displacement. The pivoted catch dis located in a recess in the lower end of the part B, and is actuated by the spring 9, which is placed between it and the bottom of the recess. The lower end of the part B is extended and provided with the loop a, which is adapted to re ceive a tether-strap.
In practice the tongue b enters the recess between the cross-bar e and the rear wall of the said recess, and when the other ends of the parts are brought together the tongue embraces the said cross-bar and holds the upper ends of the fastener from separating, the lower ends being held together by the hook I) and the catch d.
Fig. 5 shows the fastener in its simplest form, and adapted for connecting the ends of straps, reins, &c.', the parts of the fastener being provided with loops H and H to receive the ends of the straps.
Figs. 1, 2, and 4show the fastener especially designed for halters of any form, and provided with means at each end to admit of being con nected with the throat-strap A and the nosestrap D. These means, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consist of loops is k and 7c 75;, through which the straps pass, and as shown in Fig. 4 they consist of depressions at l land Z Z in the edges of the fastener in which the ends of the straps are fitted and riveted.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- l. The herein-described harness-fastener, composed of two parts, one part having a curved tongue at one end which is adapted to embrace a cross-bar on the other part, and means, as the hook and the catch, for holding the other ends of the parts together, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described harness fastener, composed of two parts, one part having a hook, as b, the other part having a catch, as d, to engage with the hook b to hold the two parts together, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. The herein-described harnessfastener, composed of two parts, one part having a Ice curved tongue, I), at one end and a hook, b, at the other end, the other part having a recess, as e, to receive the tongue, and cross-bar e, to
be engaged by the said tongue at one end, and
to and removed from the animal without slipping it over its nose, substantially as described. 6. The combination, with the herein-described halter having its head and nose straps separated or divided, of the fastener composed of the two parts B and B, the part B having the curved tongue I), the hook I), and the tongue f, the part B having the recess a, the crossbar a, the groove f, the catch d, and a loop to receive the tether-strap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. l REDERliOK HARDY.
