To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ORRIN B. READ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkrein-Loops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in checkrein-loops; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arran ement of parts hereinafter described and c aimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong, and durable checkrein-loop which will not be liable to break and which will not mar the check-hook or the like with which it is engaged.

The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved checkrein-loop. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the metallic portion of the loop.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes my improved checkrein-loop, which comprises an outer portion or loop 2, of metal, and an inner portion or loop 3, of leather or other material which will form a cushion. These loops are formed by bending strips of metal and leather or other material upon themselves, the leather being placed within the metal and being preferably of slightly greater width than the metal, as shown. The ends 4 of the strips or loops 2 3 are secured together by a rivet or similar fastening device 5, which passes through alining openings in lugs or ears 6, formed upon an eye or the like 7. The latter may be of any desired form; but I preferably construct it as shown and make the space between the ears 6 of rectangular form to receive the square or rectangular ends 4 of the loops, so that when the rivetis placed in position said parts will be rigidly secured to ether.

I preferably form t e metal loop 2 of oiltempered spring-steel, so that it will cause the leather loop to hug the hook or the like with which the device is engaged, and thereby prevent accidental disconnection of the same from the hook. The double portion of the metal loop being comparatively small and its ends substantially parallel and resilient will permit the device to be readily engaged with or disengaged from a hook, but at the same time will effectively prevent casual or accidental disconnection.

The use and advantages of the invention will be readily understood. It will be noticed that the metal strip or loop 2 renders the device exceedingly strong and durable, so that it cannot break, and the provision of the leather portion or strip 3 forms a cushion which will prevent rattling of the parts and scratching or marring of the check-hook or the like with which the loop is engaged.

Owing to the simple construction of the device, the same may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The hereindescribed checkrein-loop comprising the outer s ring-metal loop 2, the inner leather loop 3, t. e eye having the ears 6, between which the ends of the said loops are placed, and the rivet extending through said ears and the ends of the said loops and securing said loops to the eye.

2. The hereindescribed checkrein-loop comprising the flexible, inelastic innei loop having the doubled portion to engage the hook and the arms, and the outer springmetal loop having the doubled portion on and engaging that of the inner loop and the arms bearing on those of the inner loop, said outer loop serving to close the inner loo on the hook, and the eye to which the en s of the arms of the inner and outer loops are secured.
