Description
No. 648,534. Patented May I, I900.
1 B. V. SEGER.
GARMENT SUPPORTER.
(Application filed Mar. 1, 1900.)
(No Model.)
NITED STATES BENJAMIN V. SEGER, O F MILWAUKEE, \VISOONSIN.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 648,534, dated May 1, 1900.
Application filed March 1,1900- To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN V. SEGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resid ent of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Support-ers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
Myinvention has especial reference to that class of garment supporters known to the trade as skirt-hangers, although not necessarily confined thereto; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the ends, and B the cross-piece or central portion, of a yoke-bar forming part of said device. This yoke-bar is preferably made of wood. The lower part of each end A is formed with a transverse recess bin the face thereof, and the upper part of each end with another recess 0, also in its face and extending through the upper line of said end. In the intermediate portions d d of the said ends A A are secured screw-eyes e e, one pair in each end, to receive fulcrum bolts or pins ff. 0 0 represent coiled springs mounted on said bolts or pins ff, each spring comprising a pair of centrally-separated coils united by a loop g,
which projects toward the lower line of said ends A, while the outer ends of said springs h h project toward the upper line of the device and rest on the described parts (1 (1. These springs O are each made of a single 'strip of stifi spring-wire.
Serial No. 6,899. (No model.)
ward the ends A and have upturned oblique inner edges 12, adapted to be forced by the springs 0 against the recessed ends just above the plane of the said rounded ribs m, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of my device will'be readily understood from the foregoing description of its construction taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. If a skirt, for example, is to be suspended by means of my device, the skirt-band is doubled, so thatthe garment is folded flatly, and said band is then slipped to place in the recessed faces I) b of the ends A A and held by the force of the springs O 0 between the said ends and the edges 01 n of the clamping-plates D D, the lat ter being forced away from the ends by depressing the thumb-plates j j in an obvious manner for the admission of the garment, the upper recesses c c permitting the inward movement of said thumb-plates to any degree required.
My hangers hold the garment securely and firmly and by reason of the described yoke construction are adapted to hold such garments as may be higher or have a surplus of goods at some intermediate points, as Well as such garments as have a straight upper edge, and when the garment is secured in place the device, with the garment attached, may be quickly suspended by means of the hookE, so as to be readily accessible when required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A garment-supporter comprising a sus pension device, and a rigid yoke-bar secured thereto, said yokebar having upper and lower recesses in the faces'of the ends thereof; fulcrum-bolts supported on said ends, at points intermediate of said recesses; clamping-plates having shanks normally resting against said fulcrum bolts, and terminating in thumbplates in line with the said upper recesses; and springs mounted on said fulcrum-bolts and bearing against the yoke-bar ends and against the shanks of the clamping-plates to force the latter toward the lower recessed faces of said ends.
2. A garment-supporter, comprising a sus pension-hook, and a rigid yoke-bar secured thereto, said yoke-bar having upper and lower recesses in thefaees of the ends thereof, and transverse rounded ribs below the said lower recesses; screw-eyes secured to said ends at points intermediate of said recesses; fulcrumbolts supported by said screw-eyes; clamping-plates having flat shanks normally res.ting against said f ulcrum-bolts, and terminating in thumb-plates in line with said upper recesses, the said shanks having transverse depressions at points intermediate between their fulcrum-points and the clamping-plates, and said clamping-plates terminating in up turned oblique inner edges, adapted for en: gagement with said recessed ends above the plane of said rounded ribs; and springs formed of continuous strips of stifi spring-wire, bent around said fulcrum-bolts, on each side of said shanks, with central loops in engagement
