Description

A. L. LEWIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS. APPLICATIONIILED JULY 30.1907.
PATENTED APR. 14, 1908.
ANDREW L. LEWIS, OF PE'IERSBURG, VIRGINIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed July 30, 1907. Serial No. 386,303.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatv l, Axnnnw L. Lnwis, a.
citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg inthe county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Harness, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for harness.
An attachment involving my invention comprises a substantially flat serpentine spring providedwith attaching means at its opposite. ends and also provided with coils at its bends, by virtue of which a great amount of flexibility of the spring can be obtained without affecting its strength. In the present case said spring is provided with a buckle a t one end and a loop at the other whereby it may with advantage constitute part of a flexible shaft supporting device. I prefer that the buckle be connected with a saddle and that the loop be connected through a strap or in some other suitable manner with the well known tug-loop,although it will be clear that the device can be used with utility in other connections In the drawing accompanying and fori'ning part of this. specification I have illustrated a harness attachment involving my invention, in conjunction with a saddle and a. tug-loop,
a shaft partially shown passing through thelatter, the illustration being slightly in perspective.
Referring to this view, the numeral 2 designates a saddle, while 3'denotes a tug-loop through which a shaft as 4 is represented as passing, these parts being of well known character.
Between the. saddle 2 and the tug-loop 3 I interpose a spring as 5 shown as being substantially flat. and of serpentine form. The spring 5 at its upper end is equipped with a buckle as 6 which may be connected by a strap as 7 with the saddle 2. The lower end of the spring is provided with a loop as 8 which may be connected by a strap as 9 with the tug-loop 3. The spring 5 is represented as'having at its bends coils as 10. A spring constructed as described is resilient yet strong; if desired, it may be of one continuous piece of wire and, when thus made, can be inexpensively produced. The spring 5 may be provided between its ends with a keeper as 11 forv the free portion of the strap 7.
that .I claim is:
An attachrnent for harness comprising a substantially flat serpentine spring provided with attaching means at opposite ends, said spring being also provided with coils at its bends.
In testimony whereof I have'hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW L. LEWIS.
