SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,221, dated May 30, 1893.

I To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEVI G. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandy Creek, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Expansible Harness-Loop, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to harnessloops, and has for its object to provide a metallic loop to take the place of leather loops, and can be made more cheaply than the latter, is strong and durable, and by its constructionand use avoids the inconvenience consequent upon wearing stitches; and it is further adjustable and can be decreased or increased in size by springing the same apart to place the same over different sized straps.

With this object in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a box loop or slide forming the subject-matter of this invention, and consists of a metallic plate of a yielding nature bent into a rectangular form and having the central portion of the back thereof formed with a longitudinal opening 2, whereby the same may be applied to straps of varying cross-sectional Widths and also thicknesses, and to render the same adjustable and adapted for an engagement with an increase in bulk.

The said loop or slide is adapted to be movably mounted on a strap, as shown, and when it is adjusted to compensate for an increase in bulk the same is sprung apart, said movement being readily attainable by the opening 2 in the back of the same. may be readily ornamented in any suitable manner and suitably embellished with designs thereby forming a neat and pleasingattachment to harness.

By forming the loop or slide as herein set forth of metal, it renders the same stronger and more durable than if constructed of leather, and it will not break apart, as there are no stitches to wear off on the bottom of the same; and it can be made to bite firmly on the strap to which it is applied by pressing the free ends at the back formed by the opening 2, inward against the strap, and it will also be seen that by springing the said ends outward the loop or slide will be made larger. It will also be understood that the device will be made in a number of different sizes, as found necessary, for application to different dimensions of straps or other parts.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is A clasp or loop for straps made of spring sheet-metal of rectangular form, the ends of the clasp being separated at the back and adapted to spring inward or outward to accommodate straps of different thicknesses, substantially as described.
