UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
- .IUSTUS A. TRAUT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,680, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed April 4, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J UsTUs A. TRAUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to that class of suspender-buckles having box-and-slide cast-offs, the object being to provide a cast-o buckle having means for insuring proper operation of the cast-off when the slide is closed and having a slide constructed for permitting llateral movement thereon of the suspender-end.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of a box-and-slide buckle embodying my present improvements. .-Fig. 2 is a view of the back side of the buckle shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is avertical transverse section through the box and slide of the buckle in line a ot, Fig. 1, showing the slide locked in place in the box of the buckle. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig..1, but showing the slide closed for detaching the same from the box. Fig. 5 is a view of the back side of the buckle-slide and illustrates the operation of the pivotallysupported portion thereof.
Similar characters designate like parts in all the figures.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the usual form of box B is shown forming the lower end of a buckle-lever L, whose upper end is pivoted in a well-known manner in the usual In Figs. 3, 4, and 5, inclusive, the Web-case, not relating to my present improvements, is not shown.
The slide-box B consists of the front plate 2, the sides 3 and 5, and the back 4. The lower end of the front plate 2 is provided with the hook or catch 6, Figs. 3 and 4, for engaging in the slot of the slide-spring.
The buckle-slide consists of the back plate 8, which is folded at its upper end at 9 to form the slide-spring 10. This spring has formed therein the slot 12 for engaging the aforesaid catch ofthe slide-box. The lower end 10 of said spring projects to form a thumb-piece whereby to close the slide-spring from its position in Fig. 3 to its position in Fig. 4 for the purpose of detaching the slide from its box.
The strap-carrying slide S at its lower end is Serial No. 427,599. (No model.)
constructed or furnished with means for oarrying the usual suspender-end (not herein shown) and is constructed to so engage the slide-box that on the closing of the slidespring, as shown in Fig. 4, this is forcibly withdrawn from the catch 6, whereupon the slide maybe freely withdrawn. For this purpose said slide S is shown provided with a suitable catch or lip, as 14, which when the slide is in place in the slide-box engages the slidebox in the manner shown to prevent any forward movement of the slide S in said box when the slide-spring is closed upon it.
Asa means for supporting a strap-carrying loop, and also for providing the aforesaid slidebox-engaging catch or lip, the lower end of the slide S is shown folded over or formed into an eye or coil 13, in which said loop 15 is carried, as will be understood by comparison of Figs. 2 to 5, inclusive, the lip 14 being formed of the upwardlyextending middle portion of said folded-over end of the slide.
Another feature of my invention relates to the construction of the strap-carrying slide whereby the strap-carrying-loop is made movable sidewise of the buckle. For this purpose the slide S is formed of two parts c andf, which are pivotally connected at 16 by means of a suitable rivet or eyelet 17, whereby the lower part f is swiveled upon the upper one, so as to swing thereon, as indicated by solid and dotted lines, respectively, in Fig. 5. By this means a free sidewise movement of the strap carrying loop 15 is obtained, which when the slide is in the buckle, as in Fig. 2, does not interfere with the proper operation of the catch or lip 14 for effecting the detachment of the slide from its box. In practice the user can detach the slide equally well whether said swiveled portion be in the position shown by solid lines in Fig. 5 or in the position thereof shown by dotted lines in said figure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a buckle of the class specified, the combination, with the box and its catch, of a strap-carrying slide consisting of two parts pivotally connected and having a spring constructed to engage the slide-box catch, substantially as set forth.
2. In a buckle of the class specified, the
IOO
combination, with `the box and its catch,`of a strap-carrying slide consisting of tv`vo parts pivotally connected, one of said parts having a spring constructed to engage the slide-box catch and the other part having a catch engaging the box for detaching the slide on the closing of the spring, substantially as set forth.
3. In a buckle of the class specified, the combination, with a slide-box substantially as described, of the buckle-slide consisting of the part e, having a box-engaging spring, and the part f, swiveled upon the part e and having a strap-'carrying loop, substantially as set forth. l
4. In a buckle of the class specified, the combination, with the slide-box, of the buckleslide consisting of the two parts e and f, the one folded upon the other, the part e having the buckle-sprn g xed thereto and constructed to engage a catch on the slide-box and the zo carrying end thereof the upturned lip con- 3o structed to engage the back plate of the box, whereby to withdraw the front plate from the catch on the closing of the spring, substantially as described.
