Description

F. HEILES.
Buckles.
Patented Apr'|28,1874.
NITED STATES PATENTv OFFICEo FREDBICK HEILES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,239, dated April 28, 1874; application filed March 27, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIGK HEILEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the follow# ing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a face view of my buckle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the same in the plane a; x, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same in the plane y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a buckle composed of a base and of afaceplate, which are united by a hinge-joint, the base being provided with a projection on its upper surface to retain one end of a belt or strap, and with hooks or other equivalent devices on its under surface to engage with the other end of said belt or strap. When the face-plate is turned down it covers the projection on the upper surface of the baseplate, and a nose or loop secured to its edge engages with a spring bolt or catch on the base, s0 that the two parts are firmly locked together, and the strap or belt is securely retained in the buckle.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the base-plate of my buckle, which is made of sheet metal, and which may be plated with nickel, silver, or coated with any other suitable material to prevent it from tarnishin g. The edges of this base are turned up, and a face-plate, B,
is connected to one of its sides by means of a hingejoint, a. 0n the side of the base opposite to said hinge-joint is secured a spring bolt or catch, b, of any suitable construction, and the faceplate is provided with a nose or loop,
opposite end ofthe strap or belt.
c, which, when said faceplate is turned down, engages with the springcatch, so as to lock the two parts of my buckle rmly together. From the surface of the base projects a button, d, (one or more,) which is intended to engage with holes in one end of the strap or belt (l, and from the under surface of said base project hooks e, for the purpose of retaining the The belt (l is provided with eyeleteholes f in one end to tit the hooks c, and with other eyelet-holes, g, in its opposite end to lit the button d. The end with the holes f is hooked on the hooks c, the belt is carried round the body, and then the face-plate is turned open 5 one of the holes gis made to catch over the button d, and then the faceplate is turned down, so that it is locked by the spring-catch b.
By this arrangement the belt is effectually prevented from becoming disengaged from the button d, and the face-plate presents an unbroken surface, so that it can be ornamented to suit the taste of the public, and, at the same time, the operation of fastening and unfastening the belt can be performed with ease and facility.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A buckle in which the basegplate A is provided with a stud, d, on one side, and holes e c on the other, for connecting the ends of a ladys belt, and a sliding spring bolt or catch for engaging with a nose, c, for locking down the hinged faceplate, all combined and constructed substantially as described, to operate as set forth.
